Most of these mistakes are easy to avoid with just a few simple habits and adjustments. With a few swaps and changes, your iPhone can maintain its battery health much longer than you might expect.

One tech expert has shared several practical tips for keeping your battery in top shape, from the way you charge your phone to settings you can tweak to reduce strain.

1. Background App Refresh

Background App Refresh allows apps to update their content in the background, even when you’re not using them. While this can be convenient, it can also drain your battery quickly because your phone is constantly running tasks you may not need. By turning off or limiting Background App Refresh, you can prevent unnecessary battery use and extend your iPhone’s overall battery life. To adjust this setting, go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh and choose Off or select Wi-Fi only. You can also manage it app by app, turning off the feature for apps that don’t need to constantly update.

2. Dark Mode

Dark Mode changes your iPhone’s interface from bright whites to darker shades, which can help save battery since your screen uses less power to display black pixels. Beyond saving battery, Dark Mode can also reduce eye strain in low-light settings. To enable it, go to Settings > Display & Brightness, then select Dark. You can also schedule Dark Mode to turn on automatically at sunset or during certain hours, so your phone works efficiently while protecting both your battery and your eyes.
