A well applied face of makeup has the capacity to enhance all of your best features and leave you glowing and youthful, masking signs of aging for a flawless complexion. But just as your makeup can play up your look, when done incorrectly or with the wrong products it can age your appearance and drag down your face, emphasizing the features you wish to hide. With this in mind, we asked Sephora Beauty Director David Razzano for his best tips on the makeup mistakes to avoid if you want to look younger, and this is what he had to say.

60+ Gift Ideas For Everyone On Your List

Too Much Concealer

Concealer is great for hiding skin imperfections and dark under eye bags, but too much concealer will ultimately cause you to look cakey and overdone, aging your face considerably. Razzano explains, “Concealer can help us keep those under eyes looking young and fresh but when you use too much it can start to crease and add texture. Consider instead using a color corrector first to neutralize under eye discoloration.”

Up for the task is the Bobbi Brown Under Eye Corrector ($29), “[It] is a great formula with many shades that can quickly diminish those under eye circles and this way you can use way less concealer to achieve the desired look,” Razzano notes.

No More Matte

Matte products certainly have their place and can look great in an eyeshadow look or to take shine out of your complexion. However, using too many matte products can dry out your skin, aging you and removing dimension from your appearance. “Even though you may love matte skin, don’t rush to use all mattifying products on your complexion. This can end up looking super dry and textured. A great matte foundation can still be used but think about priming your skin with a great hydrating primer first. This way it balances the textures for a beautiful result,” Razzano warns.

For a hydrating priming to prep your skin, he suggests the Milk Makeup Hydro Grip Primer ($30) to set your skin without drying it out. You can still rock the matte look without appearing cakey and cracked!

Skipping Lip Liner

Lipstick is a great tool for enhancing your pout and making it look fuller and more plump. However, a bold lipstick without lip liner can blur at the edges, slipping into your fine lines and giving an overall unflattering effect. Razzano explains, “As we get older, we tend to lose volume in our lips and can develop small lines and wrinkles there. A bright lipstick can often begin to ‘bleed’ out into the lines and it can make the effect even worse. To avoid this, simply use a lip liner. It can help add a barrier to stop lipstick from ‘bleeding’ and add some defined shape and volume to the lips.”

If you’re in the market for a good lip liner, Razzano suggests the Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat Lip Liner ($22) as it glides on, lining the lips smoothly to enhance their appearance without looking dry.

Glow Overload

Just as an overload of matte products can age your complexion, so too can too much highlight and glitter products. Razzano notes, “I do recommend being cautious of using glow products with a lot of glitter and heavy sparkles, as these can sometimes draw attention to fine lines and wrinkles rather than accentuate our beautiful skin. Consider using a highlighter that is more of a sheen or simply a clear dewy finish. This will help your skin shine look hydrated and radiant.”

For an understated and subtle glow, Razzano recommends the Becca Cosmetics Zero No Pigment Glass Highlighter For Face and Lips ($24) as a great multipurpose product that will add some highlight to your skin without appearing overwhelming.
