In an insightful TikTok video, seasoned makeup artist and content creator Michelle Spieler shared valuable tips on how mature beauties over 50 might unintentionally exacerbate the look of “texture and creasing” through typical concealer mistakes.

Below, we’ll break down her tips and tricks. We also gathered advice and insight from another TikTok video from celebrity MUA Erica Taylor.

“Mature friends, are you still doing your concealer like this?” Spieler said in the below clip while placing concealer dots right beneath her lower eyelids and blending it with a brush.

Common Concealer Errors For Mature Beauties And How To Fix Them, According To A Pro MUA

Adding Too Much Concealer To The Under-Eye Area

She added: “There’s nothing wrong with it really. It’s just that we have a lower eyelid, most of us do, and when you put concealer completely under your whole eye, you’re covering that lower eyelid, which can make your eyes look smaller and also create more texture increasing.” Spieler then showed her followers a “different way” to apply concealer to cover dark eye circles while also preventing your eyes from looking smaller.

Instead, Try Applying Concealer To Your Hand First, Then Dark Circles

“Let me show you a different way, by putting a little bit on the back of your hand,” the makeup artist added. She then put concealer on the back of her hand, dipping her brush in it and then applying it from the brush to her under-eyes. “Just pick up what you need and only put it where you have discoloration,” she shared. Spieler also noted that “you can still do it in the outer corner and “it’s fun to lift that outward outer eye, but just a little tiny bit.”

She also stressed avoiding putting concealer directly all under your eyes and “on your lower eyelid.” Instead, as she went on: “I like to warm it up and press it into the skin, it looks a little bit more natural this way, and then I want you to see the difference.” She compared both methods of concealer application while pointing at her under-eyes.

Why Using A ‘Balmy’ Concealer With A ‘Sheen’ Is Vital Over 40, According To A Pro MUA

In her post about “anti-aging makeup tips,” Taylor explained how to find the best hydrating concealer for aging skin that won’t dry out your complexion or inadvertently settle into fine lines or wrinkles. Taylor commenced her video by evaluating a concealer’s suitability on the back of her hand. She sought to ascertain if the concealer would match her skin tone and type while also ensuring it would not further exacerbate dry skin, as it naturally loses moisture over 40.

“When choosing a concealer, test it on the back of your hand,” she explained. “If it looks immediately dry on your hand, it will be immediately dry on your face,” she noted. Taylor then showed viewers her concealer of choice, the $22 Glossier Stretch Balm Concealer.

According to the brand, the product is a versatile concealer that can be layered and seamlessly blended for a luminous, radiant effect. With a shade range of 32 options, it is suitable for camouflaging everything from under-eye circles to acne and inflammation.

She said that mature beauties should always "opt for a balmy, creamy concealer that does not get crusty on your hand." Taylor then applied one line of the aforementioned Glossier product beside another line of an unnamed liquid concealer on the back of her hand.

The MUA noted that her favorite one was "still hydrated and had a sheen" whereas the other was "immediately dry," and she deemed it a "no from me." A hydrating, balmy concealer, she stressed, is always a "yes" for mature skin, as it "just glides on" the under-eye area, as she then demonstrated.

This then led to a more lifted look, while also effortlessly covering her dark under-eye areas. The creator also explained that she chose the "Glossier shade light 4," which is light with pink undertones.

The Bottom Line

In addition, she pointed out that this concealer didn't over the "fullest coverage" out of all the ones she tried, but that it was "fine" when paired with water-based foundation, another kind of makeup product many makeup artists recommend for hydrating drier mature skin. We're def trying this hack!
