Today is your only chance to get McDonald’s Egg McMuffin for just 63 cents, as part of the Chicago-based chain’s promotion around the popular breakfast sandwich turning 50. The fast food chain announced this week that during breakfast hours (6am to 10:30am) today, Thursday, November 18th, they will be offering the egg-based breaky sammy for less than a dollar when purchased through the McDonald’s app (which is refreshing, considering how many menu prices they’ve raised recently). The promotion will surely boost its rewards program sign-ups (and filly our bellies, too), and also features a promotion around make the Egg McMuffin “a little extra.”
The restaurant is also launching other “fan hacks” of the sandwich. Order yours with customizations, such as asking for a “Sweet Chicken Sammie” or a McChicken Biscuit and syrup on top. Or you can order the sandwich wrapped in two hash browns, rather than the English muffins. OK, this is actually pretty fun.
In a release for the anniversary promo, the company explained that, "The Egg McMuffin, the first-ever quick service restaurant breakfast sandwich, joined the McDonald's menu in 1971 in Santa Barbara, California, and customers have been getting creative with it ever since." Senior director of brand communications Molly McKenna continued in the release, “It’s been fun to see all the ways they’ve made it their own — whether it’s adding some heat with salsa or sweetness with jam or combining it with the Sausage McMuffin, they’re always innovating. I personally love to add a little heat to my Egg McMuffin." Thanks for the idea, Molly!
Little history for ya: the breakfast sandwich was created by California franchisee Herb Peterson in 1971, likening it to an "eggs Benedict on the go." McDonald's national added the sandwich to menus in 1975, and its become a bestseller of its breakfast menu since. While some sandwiches comes and go (ahem, McRib) the Egg McMuffin has continued to be a fan favorite.
