We have heard both sides of the infamous bridesmaid dress incident, whereby Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle were both accused of making the other cry during a confrontation about Princess Charlotte‘s bridesmaid dress for Prince Harry and Meghan’s wedding in May, 2018.

And now there is a new version of the incident, as told to royal author Tom Quinn by a royal staffer for his new biography, Yes, Ma’am: The Secret Life of Royal Servants. We’re listening intently!

Royal Author Offers Another Perspective In Infamous Bridesmaid Dress Argument

One side of the story is that the former Suits actress made the Princess of Wales cry during a disagreement about Princess Charlotte's ill-fitting bridesmaid dress for the royal wedding, as well as whether the young royal should follow protocol and wear tights.

However, the As Ever founder told Oprah Winfrey in her bombshell 2021 interview that it was actually the other way round, and the Princess of Wales later sent her a bunch of flowers to apologize for upsetting her. So what is the third version of events?

"I can tell you that all the papers and commentators got this wrong," a royal member of staff was quoted as saying in Quinn's book, adding: "The truth is that as with many of these spats between sisters, brothers or even sisters-in-law, both sides were really upset."

"The truth is that during the discussions about the bridesmaid dress Meghan said a few things she regretted and Kate said a few things she later regretted, but it was all in the heat of the moment," the staff member continued, adding: "Both women were crying their eyes out!"

Royal Staffer Says The Media Blew The Argument Out Of Proportion

The royal staffer went on to explain how the media had blown the whole argument out of proportion, which was quite a rare incident because private family matters seldom make it to the media.

"Whenever this sort of thing happens in the royal family, traditionally no one says anything publicly about it so it rarely reaches the media, but on this occasion all sorts of other grievances meant that what was really nothing but a storm in a teacup reached the media and became a big issue," the staffer explained, as per Quinn's new book.

"The other thing people forget is that when a private royal argument or row reaches the media, it gets subtly altered and usually made more significant than it really is," they continued, adding: "But even the royals tend to believe what they read in the newspapers if it suits them, so the incident with the bridesmaid's dress became a kind of marker for all the other problems that Meghan had with Kate and with William and other members of the family."
