Despite Meghan Markle telling Oprah Winfrey that Kate Middleton made her cry over an alleged dispute about bridesmaid dresses for her and Prince Harry’s royal wedding, a new book has hinted that that wasn’t actually the case, and it was the Duchess of Cambridge, now 40, who “burst into tears” following the altercation. Woah!
Apart from the fact that Meghan’s estranged father Thomas Markle couldn’t attend, one of the other biggest talking points of the royal wedding – which took place on May 19th 2018 – was the alleged feud between Meghan, now also 40, and sister-in-law Kate, which was over the bridesmaid dress daughter Princess Charlotte, now 7, was going to wear on the big day. Since then, some reports have alleged that Meghan made Kate cry, while in Meghan and Harry’s infamous Oprah interview which aired in March 2021, Meghan said the “reverse” happened. According to Tom Bower's new book, Revenge, Meghan's account of the events wasn’t exactly true, as he wrote that several unnamed sources confirmed that Kate was indeed the one who "burst into tears" following their disagreements. Bower claimed Meghan’s "insistence" was "supported" by her former best friend Jessica Mulroney, whose daughter Ivy was also a bridesmaid. "Some would say that Meghan compared Ivy favorably against Charlotte," Bower wrote, which also allegedly upset Kate, before noting that some of the other disagreements were about the hemline of the dresses, as well as whether the girls "should wear tights" with them. (FYI, the bridesmaids didn’t end up wearing tights on the day, but at Prince William and Kate Middleton's wedding back in April 2011, they did!)
"Kate felt it was too short and anyway did not fit," he wrote, in reference to the length of Princess Charlotte's dress, and added that Meghan "wouldn’t compromise." He also wrote that Kate was "tired" having given birth to Prince Louis in April 2018, and was "too fatigued to cope" with the disagreements, while also being "irritated by complaints of Meghan bullying her staff." He then went on to write that Meghan allegedly showed "little sympathy for those outside of her circle."
To refresh your memories, in Meghan's version of events, the Duchess of Cambridge was the one who made Meghan cry, which she said she "apologized" for. "It made me cry, and it really hurt my feelings," Meghan told Oprah in their 2021 interview about the alleged arguments.
"There wasn’t a confrontation," Meghan confessed. "I don’t think it’s fair to her to get into the details because she apologized, and I’ve forgiven her. It was a really hard week of the wedding and she was upset about something, but she owned it, and she apologized, and she brought me flowers and a note, apologizing."
Do we believe every word in Bower's book? It's important to note that Bower himself admitted that he acknowledged that all of his sources were people who were not fans of the Duchess of Sussex! "She made it pretty clear to all her friends and people who work for her not to talk to me, so it was quite an uphill struggle but I got enough people to speak to me, more than enough, I got about 80 people," he said on Good Morning Britain. However, he insisted that the book wasn’t biased, adding: "I sifted through, I never put in stuff that isn't true and can't be checked."
