Meghan Markle’s final words as a working royal have been revealed by Omid Scobie, author of the Sussex biography, Finding Freedom: Harry and Meghan and the Making of A Modern Royal Family. Scobie reports that just as the former Duchess of Sussex was to leave the UK and her royal role, she tearfully whispered, “it didn’t have to be this way.”

Meghan’s Final Days as a Royal
The Suits actress’s final royal engagement was a meeting with the Association of Commonwealth Universities scholars. Meghan invited the scholars to Buckingham Palace and together they discussed the need for sustainable cities and health innovation in order to attack the issue of climate change. But, after the scholars had left, the tears began to flow.
“Tears that the Duchess had been bravely holding back [were] free to flow,” Scobie recalls of the day. “The Duchess of Sussex emotionally [bid] much-loved aides farewell, with her flight ‘home’ to Canada leaving in a matter of hours.” The Duchess and her royal aides had grown close during her tenure as a royal, and at this moment, Meghan was saying goodbye to more than just close friends.

Scobie reports that Meghan caught the last commercial flight to Canada so that she would be home before her son, Archie, awoke in the morning. But before she departed, she hugged Scobie close and tearfully whispered, “it didn’t have to be this way.”
