Piers Morgan Mocks Meghan Markle After Netflix Cancels Her Show 'Pearl'

This story was updated on 05/08/2022 to reflect the latest updates on Piers Morgan, his most recent comments related to Meghan Markle and the cancellation of her Netflix animated series, ‘Pearl’ that was first announced last summer.

It seems that if any negative headlines surround Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, Piers Morgan is surely around the corner waiting to attack and ridicule. The television personality, 57, is now taking the chance to jab at the Duchess of Sussex once more after Netflix cancelled an animated series she created and was set to executive produce, called Pearl.

Markle announced last summer that she was beginning to work on Pearl, but as Deadline reported last week, the streaming service has experienced a recent drop in subscribers. With that said, Netflix needed to drop several projects, including Pearl, which was also supposed to feature filmmaker David Furnish (Elton John‘s husband) as executive producer as well.

After dubbing the cancellation of Markle’s project “a whole new level of humiliation,” the former Good Morning Britain presenter didn’t stop there. On his TalkTV show, Uncensored, he added that the royal couple are “subtly discovering that maybe the rest of the world isn’t quite as excited by their self-righteous brand of their pious, hypocritical, money-grabbing, virtue-signalling, royal-bashing, as they are.”

He sarcastically continued, “I don’t believe in cancel culture so I was obviously distraught to learn that the woman who cancelled me has now been cancelled herself. Netflix has shelved the production of Pearl, an animated series developed by Meghan Markle and Sir Elton John’s husband David Furnish.”

Morgan, (who has been open about his disdain for Markle since her engagement to Prince Harry), then described Pearl‘s supposed plot, with a few extra insults thrown in. “It was about a 12-year-old girl inspired by influential women. Apparently, it was based on her own very inspiring rags to Royal riches story. Sadly, nobody at Netflix shared my inspiration. Concern is now mounting that their whole £100m deal might now be in jeopardy.” Morgan also referred to another one of Markle’s recent projects, “her nauseatingly patronizing children’s book, The Bench.”

The former Britain’s Got Talent judge then said, “Let’s face it, when the world’s wokeist production company axes the world’s wokeist project by the world’s wokeist celebrity, that’s a whole new level of humiliation.” He concluded, “I wish Meghan, sincerely, all the very best at this difficult time.”

Morgan, as many will recall, quit his position on Good Morning Britain in March 2021 after comments he made about Markle’s interview with Oprah Winfrey garnered immense backlash (with fans saying that his jabs about Markle’s mental health and suicidal thoughts were uncalled for, among other things).

In August of 2021, Markle was excited to announce the series as one of the first endeavors she was working on from Archewell Productions, the media company she shares with her husband. “Like many girls her age, our heroine Pearl is on a journey of self-discovery as she tries to overcome life’s daily challenges,” the Suits star said in a press release at the time.

“I’m thrilled that Archewell Productions, partnered with the powerhouse platform of Netflix and these incredible producers, will together bring you this new animated series, which celebrates extraordinary women throughout history.” She also added that she and filmmaker Furnish were “eager to bring this special series to light.”

This won’t be the last project from Archewell, as the company is still developing other media including The Heart of Invictus, a docuseries centered around veterans competing in the Invictus Games (a sporting event for wounded, injured and sick service people which the Duke of Sussex founded). As for Pearl, it is dead on arrival. Deadline also noted that the show was cut before going into production and was still in its development phase up until now.
