Michelle Obama Talks About Her Fashion Evolution In Her New Book ‘The Look’
Michelle was on the show to promote her new book, The Look, which explores her fashion evolution over the years. Co-authored with her longtime stylist, the highly-anticipated book includes photos from her years in the political spotlight, along with interesting anecdotes about some of her most talked-about outfits.
Also in the book, the IMO podcast host opened up about the intense scrutiny she faced when she and husband Barack Obama were in the White House, along with their daughters Sasha and Malia, and wrote: “We were all too aware that as a first black couple, we couldn’t afford any missteps.”
“And that as a black woman, I was under a particularly white hot glare,” she continued. She went on to say: “We didn’t get the grace that I think some other families have gotten.”
Michelle Obama Says She Thought Fashion Would Be A 'Distraction' During Her White House Years
Back then, Michelle said she tried to keep fashion from taking center stage so it didn't distract people from her and Barack's work. "I avoided talking about fashion for eight years because I thought it would be a distraction," she said, before going on to explain why she feels now is the right time to explore it. "I think now is the time. People know me. They know who I am. They know my values," she confessed.
These days, Mrs. Obama's perspective has shifted. "You know, style and fashion, and how we show up in the world is an important way that we send a message," she told Robin Roberts in a recent GMA interview to promote her book, adding: "What you're wearing says something about what you care about. It speaks to your background, your culture."
The Becoming author also reflected on the pressure that comes with being a woman in the public eye, adding: "We live in a culture, sadly, where, you know, if somebody wants to go after a woman, the first thing they do is go after our looks, our size, our physical being, as a way to, you know, make us feel small, to keep us in place."
