Pro Hairstylist Says These 5 Mistakes Are ‘Ruining’ Your Bob Haircut: ‘Absolutely Avoid’

The bob has stood the test of time as one of the most iconic, flattering haircuts. But while it may look effortless, keeping your bob sharp, modern, and flattering requires the right cut and styling. According to celebrity hairstylist Justin Hickox, who has been working behind the chair since 1995, there are a few common mistakes that could be sabotaging your look.

Here are the five biggest bob mistakes Hickox says to avoid—and how to fix them so your haircut enhances your face shape, styles more easily, and looks chic every day.

1. Keeping the Cut Too Straight Across

A blunt, floor-parallel bob can look trendy, but Hickox warns it may drag your face down instead of lifting it up. Instead, he suggests working with your natural face structure by adding subtle angles that draw the eye upward, giving the illusion of a more youthful, lifted look.

2. Skipping Layers in the Nape

Leaving the back of your bob completely one-length can create heaviness and make your style look weighed down. A little beveling in the nape keeps the shape lighter and prevents the eye from being pulled downward, giving the bob a fresher finish.

3. Over-Layering Around the Ears

One of the quickest ways to ruin the clean, sharp line of a bob? Too many layers right above the ears. This area has fewer hair follicles, so over-layering often leaves thin or “bald” spots that disrupt the haircut’s structure.

4. Choosing the Wrong Front Length for Your Face Shape

That chic bob you saw in a magazine may not translate perfectly for you. Hickox stresses the importance of customizing the front length:

  • If you want to elongate a fuller face, keep the bob slightly longer than your chin.
  • If your face is long and narrow, a chin-length bob helps add balance and fullness.

5. Adding Too Much Curl at the Ends

While a little bend can add softness, over-curling the ends of your bob can make it look dated and heavy at the jawline. It also flattens the hair at the crown, stealing volume from where you want it most. Instead, aim for natural movement throughout the mid-lengths and roots for a more modern, face-flattering style.

The Bottom Line

A bob can be one of the most flattering haircuts—if it’s tailored to you. Avoiding these five common mistakes will help your cut grow out better, style more easily, and bring out the best in your face shape. As Hickox puts it, it’s the difference between having just a haircut and having a true hairstyle.
