If you’re suffering from thinning hair and fallout, regardless of the cause you’re likely looking for a long term solution, as well as the best way to style your locks in the interim. While some haircuts can further emphasize thinning patches and make the fallout appear even worse, there are certain styles which add much needed volume to your strands, strategically falling over areas where you may be lacking hair in order to flatter your look. Sound like a familiar struggle? We asked a hair stylist to provide the five best haircuts to ask for the next time you’re in the salon and looking to give your limp locks a boost, and this is what she had to say.
Pixie Cut
Particularly in instances when you’re struggling with fallout, a shorter haircut such as a pixie can help to create the illusion of thicker strands as they’re no longer being weighed down by the length. “The cut does 100% of the work on this one so it’s a great choice for someone with fine or thin hair. Since a pixie cut is extremely short it doesn’t ask much of your hair,” explains celebrity hairstylist and owner of Hair Addict Salon, Michelle Cleveland. Take cues from Zoe Kravitz or Rihanna with this stylish cut, and an added bonus is your hair will be out of your face during the hot summer months.
Graduated Bob
If you aren’t quite ready to make the major chop, a graduated bob is a great way to take off some length and add volume without the commitment. “Fine hair usually means there’s a lack of volume so wearing your hair long can be a struggle. This haircut creates the illusion of thicker, fuller, more dense hair in the crown area which can instantly change your overall look,” says Cleveland. A timeless cut, the bob can flatter any face shape and work to enhance your strands so they don’t hang limply around your shoulders.
Shag
Arguably the most stylish cut of the moment, shag has risen in popularity over the past year and works for women with fine hair as well. “Fine hair girls crave volume and this cut provides it everywhere. By placing texture all around the entire top of the hair, the shag haircut can expand the volume of the hair by up to as much as 50%,” explains Cleveland. Much like Miley Cyrus’ mullet or Alexa Chung’s classic cut, this style is perfect for summer and thinning hair.
Texture with Dimension
Similar to a shag cut, adding more texture to your hair is one of the best ways to break up the appearance of thinning. “By adding layers to ANY haircut, you give it movement and lift. Add some dimensional highlights to that and you’ve given the illusion of depth and density to what was previously flat and fine,” says Cleveland. “It’s all a trick of the eye.” While it’s still best to keep hair on the shorter end, if you do opt for a slightly longer cut, adding layers will make all the difference in creating the illusion of thicker strands.
Short Blunt Bob
“If layers aren’t for you and you prefer a more “one length” look, try this haircut. The key is to cut the length somewhere just below the ears,” says Cleveland. “If you’re not going to add movement with layers then the next best thing would be to take the length as short as possible. By doing this, you give fine hair the opportunity to move more and that alone can create the illusion of more density!” A timeless cut that accentuates your facial features while diminishing the appearance of thinning locks, a blunt bob is perfect for any hair texture.
