Blueberries are perhaps one of the best fruits to snack on, especially during the summer. Aside from its sweet and refreshing taste, this particular fruit packed with antioxidants offers a plethora of health benefits. In an article published by the Cleveland Clinic, blueberries are full of vitamins and minerals, can help manage cholesterol, regulate blood sugar, and potentially lower blood pressure. As a matter of fact, when it comes to skincare, NYC-based celebrity cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Paul Jarrod Frank shares that it can even “prevent collagen loss.” However, if you just purchased some frozen blueberries from the grocery store (ex. Walmart), it’s best if you double check these fruits once again.

According to a recent post by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration, food company “BrandStorm Inc. announced it is voluntarily recalling 2 lots of Organic Freeze-Dried Blueberry (lot # 2021363-1 & 2022026-1) pouches because of the presence or potential presence of lead above the FDA’s recommended limits; per the serving size specified on the nutritional facts panel.”

The notice warns, “People with high blood levels of lead may show no symptoms, but the condition may cause damage to the nervous system and internal organs. Acute lead poisoning may cause a wide range of symptoms, including abdominal pain, muscle weakness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss, and bloody or decreased urinary output. Children are particularly vulnerable to lead poisoning.”

As reported by the U.S. FDA, “If a child is exposed to enough lead for a protracted period of time (e.g., weeks to months) permanent damage to the central nervous system can occur. This can result in learning disorders, developmental defects, and other long-term health problems.”

Additionally, the announcement noted that the “Natierra Organic Freeze-Dried Blueberries 1.2oz were distributed in the United States through retail and online stores services.”

The U.S. FDA also advised, “Consumers who purchased Natierra Organic Freeze-Dried Blueberries 1.2oz, with lot Code 2021363-1 or 2022026-1 should discard of the product. Refunds are available at the location of purchase. Returns will be provided at the point of sale through validation of lot codes on the affected pouches.”

They added, “Those who purchased online at www.Natierra.comExternal Link Disclaimer can email [email protected] to request a refund. Customers with questions may call 310-559-0259, 8am – 4:30pm PST, email [email protected] or send a direct message utilizing www.Natierra.comExternal Link Disclaimer website.”

As of this writing, BrandStorm Inc. reports that they have “not received any reports of adverse events related to use of the product as part of this proactive recall.” However, in the event that a consumer experiences symptoms of lead poisoning, they advised “to seek medical advice from their physician immediately.”

“First and foremost, we remain focused on the health and welfare of our employees, customers, and partners. We are committed to taking the appropriate steps to ensure our network and services continue to operate seamlessly for our customers,” BrandStorm Inc. concludes in their company statement.
