A Neurologist Shares The 'Brain-Boosting Breakfast Rule' That May Support Memory and Focus: 'Small Investment, Big Win'

They don’t call breakfast “the most important meal of the day” for no reason. Not only does it pave the way for a healthy day, fuel your morning workout, and keep you satisfied until lunch, but as it turns out, your breakfast can also play a major role in your mood and focus throughout the day—and, ultimately, throughout your life, too.

The first step is to make sure you’re eating breakfast at all; don’t be tempted to skip this meal just because you’re busy. But beyond that, making smart choices about what goes on your plate each morning can lead to many brain-boosting benefits. According to neurologist Dr. Rebecca S. Romero, MD, FAAN of ProCare Injury Specialists, there’s one specific breakfast rule that can keep your memory sharp and your focus in good shape: adding protein to the mix. Learn more about this expert-approved tip below.

Always Include Protein in Your Breakfast for Brain Health

According to Dr. Romero, eating protein at breakfast is a small investment for a big morning win. "Adding protein to your breakfast in the morning, such as eggs, yogurt, milk, cottage cheese, beans, or nut butters, has several important health benefits, especially as we age," she says.

There are several reasons protein can do wonders for your brain health. First of all, she explains, it keeps you full longer, especially when compared to carb-heavy options like toast, cereal, and pastries, which digest quickly and often leave you hungry soon after. "Eating protein at breakfast reduces hunger-driven eating which may indirectly benefit cognition by limiting energy crashes," Dr. Romero explains. "This is because protein digests more slowly than carbohydrates and delivers a steady glucose supply to the brain."

The next brain-boosting benefit of protein is the fact that proteins are made of amino acids. "Amino acids help your body make neurotransmitters like serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine, which affect mood, attention, and thinking," Dr. Romero tells us.

Beyond these benefits, she says, studies indicate that "a diet with higher protein intake has been linked to lower levels of amyloid-β, a key marker of Alzheimer’s disease, suggesting it may help protect brain health over time." That means it's not just a daily brain boost; over time, high-protein breakfasts can keep your cognitive health in great shape.

As far as how much protein to include in your breakfast every day, Dr. Romero offers a good rule of thumb: "Adults should aim for 20–30 grams of protein at breakfast."

Ultimately, she concludes, "Eating protein at breakfast helps you feel fuller and supports brain health, making it a simple and practical habit with meaningful long-term benefits."

Luckily, there are so many fantastic high-protein breakfasts to choose from. Your taste buds, your body, and your brain will thank you!
