Scarlett Johansson is under fire for a rare moment in time, as she recently made a statement that some social media users are struggling to get behind.

The Black Widow star recently opened up about her journey into working and motherhood, explaining that not only does she find a work-life balance to be impossible to achieve, but she also explained that she was always feeling a “deficit” in some aspect of her life. Due to her privileged lifestyle as a celebrity and reported net worth of over $100M, earning around $40M last year, people are responding to her comments with anger, feeling as though she’s portraying herself as a ‘victim.’ Read more about Scarlett’s words and how the internet reacted below.

Scarlett Johansson Says There's Always A 'Deficit' In Her Life & Says She Has A Lack Of Work-Life Balance

It's no secret that women who are public figures take on motherhood in a way no one else does. This is especially true for working actors or musicians, whose jobs take them around the world and require them to work long hours.

The Marriage Story performer recently opened up about this during her vulnerable, in-depth interview for CBS Sunday Morning, where she talked not only about upcoming projects, but also her journey into motherhood and how she's attempting to do it all.

In fact, she went as far as to state that she doesn't believe in having a work-life balance, at least with her busy career, and that coming to that conclusion helped her practice self-love and acceptance.

"I think actually admitting that there is no work-life balance is the first step to kind of getting there in a way, because it's not possible," she said. "There's always something that is… there's a deficit in some area, and I think you have to be…I learned to be more kind to myself. You can't do all of these things all the time, and so, you know, there's just like…is it good enough?"

Internet Users Slam Scarlett's Comments On Social Media

After the mom-of-two shared her thoughts in her Sunday Morning interview, which aired in April, social media users eventually recirculated her comments on feeling a "deficit."

Her words became especially controversial after some users came across her net worth and salary from last year. According to Forbes, Scarlett made approximately $43M in 2025 alone, adding to her net worth of about $165M. She's often referred to as one of Hollywood's highest-paid actresses, and it looks like she'll keep that title for quite some time.

Therefore, when she opened up about feeling a "deficit" and had a more 'privileged' take on work-life balance, some social media users had an issue with it.

"I love when millionaires tell regular people what life is like," responded a sarcastic Instagram user.

"Her point is salient for most of us, but not for herself," pointed out another. "She could easily quit acting tomorrow and live comfortably with her family forever. She chose to have deficits."

"She has plenty of money," a user wrote. "She can say no to work. She chooses not to. Let's not act like a victim."

"Says the woman whose net worth is north of $160 million," added another. "Why do we ask people with this much money how to live?"
