For many of us, hairspray is an essential tool to hold our styled locks into place and something we use frequently. While experiencing thinning hair or hair loss, many people begin to reassess the products they use daily to find a possible culprit for weaker strands. We checked in with hair experts to learn more about 1 common hairspray ingredient to avoid if your hair is already thinning. By noticing the flecks of color in your own eyes you may be able to flawlessly pick out the best hair colors for you. “Have a little green in your eyes? Try warmer toned colors,” Sibert says. “If your eyes are more grey or blue, bring that out with cool toned highlights or a rich brown to create contrast and make your eye color pop! If your eyes are golden brown try a rich warm tone. If they’re a really dark brown/almost black you can pull off just about anything. Always look at the flecks of color in your eyes and go off of that.”

Safer, Healthier Hairspray Options: Plant-Based

If hairspray is a vital tool for you that helps you style your tresses, you don’t have to give up the product, Udoh says, just be wary of ingredients like alcohol in the one you choose. “Look for hairsprays that are labeled ‘sulfate-free’ or ‘alcohol-free’ to be on the safe side,” Udoh advises. “There are plenty of great products that don't use these harsh ingredients, so you shouldn't have to sacrifice hold or style to avoid them,” she says.

As Gilbert suggests “staying away from hairspray products that contain alcohol and ethanol specifically,” Udoh agrees, and offers a healthier replacement. “I would recommend buying a hairspray with plant-based extracts that are high in biotin, vitamins B and E, and allantoin,” she concludes, as these vitamins and nutrients are often linked to shiner, thicker, more vibrant and radiant locks.
