Women spend hundreds of dollars on products that will give them the appearance of a slimmer face and sharper jawline. We see so many celebrities with sculpted features and chiseled jawlines, so that picture perfect side profile is what sets the beauty standard. However, oftentimes we forget that those people have the cash and the time to get procedures done that give them the side profile they want.
There are a few reasons you may have a rounder looking jawline. One cause could be aging—as you age, the muscles in your jaw and neck might shrink, which will give a softer appearance of the face and jaw. Another, and perhaps the more obvious, is having excess fat under the jaw and chin. At the end of the day, there is no way to spot reduce fat or control genetics, but there are some things you can do to build strength in the muscles in your face, and give your face a slimmer appearance.
One thing that is especially helpful as you age is doing facial exercises. This will help keep up the integrity of the muscles of your face—doing them just for a few seconds everyday can go a long way when done consistently. Cristina Osorio, a yoga instructor at TruFusion, shared this exercise with Healthline as one easy exercise you can do each day to strengthen your facial and jawline muscles to get more defined features and a sharper jawline.
The Tongue Twister
1. First, open your mouth wide and say “O,” directly following with “E.”
2. Make special effort to exaggerate these sounds and mouth movements while being sure to not show or touch your teeth.
3. Do this for 3 sets of 15.
As stated previously, there’s no way to spot reduce fat. However, a rounded jaw could be attributed to weak muscles in the face, especially in the jaw and underneath the chin. Building strength in those muscles can help tighten up the face and give a sharper, more sculpted look and even reduce the appearance of a double chin. The Tongue Twister exercise is one you can do to build strength in your facial muscles. You can do this exercise while sitting in the car, before bed, or while cooking dinner.
