The Outdated Eyeliner Techniques To Ditch Because They're Aging You—And The Tricks To Try Instead For A 'Lift'

Eyeliner can be one of the most transformative steps in a makeup routine—but according to beauty educator Tarina Hyland, it can also be one of the most aging if applied incorrectly. In a recent Instagram Reel, Hyland breaks down a few common eyeliner habits that she says may unintentionally make the eyes look smaller, harsher, and older.

The Eyeliner Technique That Could Be Aging Your Eyes

Hyland explains that many people still rely on outdated eyeliner placement that doesn’t fully enhance the eye shape. One of the biggest mistakes, she notes, is not lining the eyes correctly from corner to corner.

“If you’re going to use an eyeliner, make sure that you’re going right around the eye,” she says in the video, pointing out that leaving the inner and outer corners bare can actually make the eyes appear smaller and more aged.

Instead, she recommends working as close to the lash line as possible and ensuring the liner is applied evenly around the eye for a more balanced, lifted effect.

Why Black Liner May Be Too Harsh

Another key tip Hyland shares is to rethink the shade of eyeliner being used—especially during daytime looks.

“Black can be very harsh on your complexion, especially in the day,” she explains, suggesting that softer brown tones can be more flattering and natural-looking.

Brown liner, she adds, helps define the eyes without creating the same stark contrast that can sometimes emphasize fine lines or under-eye shadows.

The Lifted Eye Trick Makeup Artists Swear By

Hyland also demonstrates a subtle technique that can make a noticeable difference in eye shape: lifting the liner slightly at the outer corner.

“When you’re getting to the edge of the eye, make sure you just flick up,” she says. “That adds a lovely little lift.”

She further emphasizes blending eyeshadow upward rather than stopping at the crease. Instead of keeping color low, she recommends bringing it higher toward the brow bone to create a more lifted, youthful appearance.

Using circular blending motions, she explains, can soften the overall look while enhancing dimension and brightness around the eyes.

The Bottom Line

While eyeliner is often seen as a beauty essential, Hyland’s technique shows that small placement and color adjustments can make a big difference in how youthful and lifted the eyes appear. By switching to softer shades, hugging the lash line, and lifting product upward rather than inward, mature women may be able to modernize their look in a subtle but impactful way.
