Keeping your personal data safe and secure on your iPhone takes good habits and a bit of planning. Your data is an extremely valuable commodity and apps will try as hard as they can to get you to give them permissions that allow them to collect as much data as possible. Similarly, your phone requires regular maintenance to ensure it is as safeguarded as it can be against hackers who attempt to swipe your personal information for their own financial gain.

None of this means caring for your phone is a full-time job — quite the opposite. In most cases, it requires a few minutes a week and avoiding common mistakes that many of us make. If you want to keep your personal data safe, never make these dangerous iPhone mistakes.

1. Using Public WiFi Without a VPN

Whenever possible. avoid using public WiFi. Hackers utilize a trick called “juice jacking,” in which they load up public WiFi power stations with malicious spyware and malware. Once you connect your phone to one of these stations, the software is uploaded to your phone and hackers will gain access to your data. If you are going to use public Wifi, carry your own charging block and cables with you and use a VPN that will conceal your IP address and make the experience more private.

2. Not Updating iOS

Apple releases new updates every now and then, and it’s important to update your phone whenever this occurs. These updates often fix bugs and issues that have been spotted, so making sure your phone is up to date is one way of avoiding problems on your device.

3. Giving Apps Too Many Permissions

If you allow most apps permission to do whatever they want, you might be shocked to learn that they will take access of everything they can, including your photos, microphone, locations, and more. Take control of your apps’ permissions by going to Settings > Privacy & Security > toggling off permissions for individual categories such as Location Services, Contacts, Photos, Camera, Microphone, Bluetooth, and more.
