Snacking has become a normal part of our lives and a way to pass time while we indulge in our cravings. Snacks offer us convenience, a quick round of energy boost, a break from our routine, and are always available somewhere nearby (think snack pantries at work or home and vending machines). Not to mention our hectic schedules that sometimes throw off our meal breaks and cause us to reach for the snack drawer for a quick, tasty treat.
However, as we indulge in these snacks, there are a few factors that are causing negative effects for our overall health. Since snacking has become so common, these effects accumulate, and we start to feel the aftermath of our snacking habits. Some of these effects include inflammation, bloating, and weight gain.
To find out what popular snack you should stop eating to avoid bloating and weight gain, we spoke to Krutika Nanavati, registered dietitian and nutritionist and a medical advisor at ClinicSpots for diet and nutrition. Nanavati revealed that potato chips are a top culprit in bloating and weight gain, especially highly processed ones. Continue reading to learn more about this!
Potato Chips
"Potato chips are often nutritionally lacking and contain high levels of unhealthy fats, sodium, and refined carbohydrates. These factors contribute to various health concerns, including weight gain, elevated blood pressure, and increased risk of cardiovascular disease," Nanavati states. Potato chips have been a household favorite since their creation, but this perfectly salted snack does more harm than good. Essentially, they are deep-fried in unhealthy oils until dry and crispy; add to them some artificial colors and flavors, and you've got a recipe for bloating and weight gain disaster.
Nanavati explains to us what makes them responsible for weight gain and bloating: "They lead to excessive caloric intake and promote weight gain. The high sodium content in these snacks can cause water retention and bloating, leaving you feeling uncomfortable and puffy," she says.
Healthy Alternatives
If you're tired of constantly feeling bloated, waking up with puffy eyes and cheeks from water retention, and are trying to cut back on your weight, Nanavati suggests we opt for healthier options in place of potato chips.
"Thankfully, there are alternative snacks that can satisfy your craving for a crunchy and savory treat without the negative effects. Opt for air-popped popcorn, whole-grain crackers with hummus or nut butter, or homemade vegetable chips baked with minimal oil," she recommends. Another great option is roasted chickpeas, which are loaded with protein, soluble fiber, and beneficial carbs.
The Bottom Line
Nanavati concludes that "the unhealthy fats, high sodium content, and refined carbohydrates present in these snacks contribute to various health concerns." Aim to go for healthier snacks that will give you a similar taste but with added health benefits that aren't present in packaged and fried potato chips.
In reality, our body needs different nutrients to run smoothly, especially as we age, so it's best to keep snacks like potato chips, which offer empty calories, to a minimum and choose snacks that will make you feel less bloated and support your weight loss plans.
