Prince Harry said that companies and brands are dividing people through social media, and that we are amidst a “crisis of hate.” The royal shared his feelings in an opinion piece written for Fast Company earlier this month.
Harry and wife Meghan Markle have been reaching out to companies they believe are supporting hate and misinformation through their social media use, urging them to rethink their ways. The prince did not name companies.
“The digital landscape is unwell and companies like yours have the chance to reconsider your role in funding and supporting online platforms that have contributed to, stoked, and created the conditions for a crisis of hate, a crisis of health, and a crisis of truth,” Harry wrote.
Prince Harry, who earlier this year announced his decision to step down from royal duties, is committed to reshaping the social media landscape, especially in light of social injustice issues that are at the forefront of everyone’s minds right now.
He continued, “We believe we have to remodel the architecture of our online community in a way defined more by compassion than hate; by truth instead of misinformation; by equity and inclusiveness instead of injustice and fearmongering; by free, rather than weaponised, speech.”
It is clear that Harry and Meghan will continue to work towards bettering society, despite their departure from royal duties. The couple now live in Santa Barbara, California with their one-year-old son Archie.
