The late Princess Diana very famously said in her 1995 Panorama interview there were three people in her marriage to the then Prince Charles, in reference to the then Camilla Parker Bowles. Her exact quote was: “There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded.”
But a royal expert believes that their marriage – which lasted between 1981 and 1996, although they technically separated in 1992 – failed because of another reason that actually had nothing to do with Charles and Camilla’s affair. Keep reading for more info…
Princess Diana Reportedly Told Friend And Royal Author The Real Reason Her Marriage To King Charles Ended
According to reports, royal author Ingrid Seward claimed that the late Princess Diana told her the real reason she believed her marriage to the current monarch failed just a few weeks before her tragic death in August 1997.
"She said to me just before she died, it wasn't Camilla," Seward, who maintained a close friendship with the then Princess of Wales until she died, reportedly revealed on Hello!'s A Right Royal Podcast.
Seward quoted Princess Diana as saying: "It wasn't Camilla that ruined our marriage. It was the people around Charles." This was seemingly in reference to the staff and courtiers, who were always around the then Prince of Wales.

The My Mother and I author went on to say: "I could never unpick that comment and quite understand what it meant. But I also remember Diana's father saying how tricky the royal household was."
Seward continued to think and talk about the palace staff, and asked listeners: "Are they just a load of overinflated egos in the royal household, or are they really trying to help?"

Seward doubled down on this when she spoke with The Sun's Royal Editor, Matt Wilkinson, and once again confirmed that Princess Diana didn’t think Camilla was the sole reason her marriage failed.
"She had this spectre of Camilla in her head the whole time, she was obsessed," Seward began, adding: "Yet when I last spoke to her I brought Camilla up, and she said 'Oh it wasn't Camilla that ruined our marriage.' She said, 'It was the people around my husband.' I thought to myself 'It wasn't Camilla? You've been complaining and complaining about her all these years.'"
Seward concluded: "But she changed tack, and said it was the environment in which keeping a royal marriage together, you've got to be very strong, and probably far more mature than she was."
