From eyeliner hacks to skincare tips to hair color inspo, no matter what our beauty need may be, TikTok has us covered. If you frequently scroll through BeautyTok, you might have come across the Douyin makeup trend, which Allure defines to be an “umbrella term for a broad makeup style, defined by soft and ethereal looks that give a doll-like appearance.”

This trend often features rosy blush, voluminous lashes and diffused lipstick, all tools that professional makeup artists say can take years off your look. The name Douyin was taken from the former social media app of the same name that ByteDance created in 2016, and is exclusive to China.

We checked in with a pro MUA to learn more about takeaways from the trendy look that can work for your anti-aging goals, and other fun tips to rock the cute, softcore and stunning trend for yourself. Read on for suggestions and insight from Kerrin Jackson, celebrity, film and television makeup artist and creator of The Makeup Refinery blog.

First Off, What Is The Douyin Makeup Trend?

The trend of Douyin makeup, as Jackson explains, comes from the app with the same name. “It’s like China’s very own TikTok,” she says, adding that the Douyin makeup look is “basically a soft, feminine look that emphasizes the eyes, and has a flush-faced, doll-like finish.” For beginners, Jackson notes that “with the ample video tutorials out there to follow along to,” it’s “easy to get started” if you’re looking to try this makeup look on yourself.

“It’s all about placement,” Jackson says regarding the Douyin look, and that “getting the placement of your cheek color and your eyeliner right is key.” To get this look “on point,” Jackson suggests trying to achieve the following; “a clean, even base” finish, a “flush of pronounced color” across your cheeks and nose tip (Jackson opts for using a cream blush), and a “doe-eyed look” with your eyeliner.

“Think elongating your eyes, and soft, wispy lines,” Jackson continues, noting that a “felt-tip eyeliner will make it easier to create a soft, fine line that you can easily accentuate or add softness to with an eyeshadow powder after you’ve applied it.”

She also recommends focusing on your complexion to create a more youthful glow. “Your foundation of choice should create a natural, yet flawless finish to your complexion,” she says. If you “don’t like or need much coverage, try a lighter skin tint or tinted moisturizer,” she suggests.

How Can The Douyin Look Make You Look Younger?

If you apply your products strategically with this trend, Jackson says, “you can definitely achieve a lift to your face.” For example, she nods to the “elongated eye shape,” and explains that “if you bring the eyeliner up at the outer edges, you’ll get an instant lift to your eyes as it’s all about the angles.”

“The Douyin makeup is very youthful, and doll-like,” Jackson stresses. “I think anytime a makeup look gives the result of youthfulness it is bound to get attention,” she says regarding its popularity on TikTok and beyond. “Generally, we all want to look younger and we all want to look healthy, and the basics of the makeup look give us both of those things.”
