With Halloween right around the corner, you may be stocking up on candies to hand out to all the trick-or-treating ghosts and ghouls (maybe even taking advantage of bulk deals at Costco?). However, there’s one candy that definitely be left out of baskets this year. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSP) has just issued a recall on Cocco Candy Rolling Candy after a choking death. Find all the details below.
Rolling Candy recalled after choking death
It looks like small toys aren't the only thing parents have to worry about their children choking on. On October 5, the CPSC recalled Rolling Candy because the packaging lead to a choking death.
This liquid candy is stored in a tube with a rollerball dispenser that's meant to allow people to roll it onto their tongues. However, the fact that the rolling ball can become dislodged from the tube creates a choking hazard.
This hazard became fatal last April, when a 7-year-old girl in New York choked to death on the candy's ball. Although it's six months later, the recall was just recently made official.
Recalled products include 2-fluid ounce Cocco's Rolling Candy, which comes in Sour Strawberry, Sour Tutti Frutti, and Sour Cola flavors. These products were sold both in stores and online between May 2022 and March 2023. Anyone in possession of this candy and encouraged to return them for a refund from KGF Distribution Corp.
Past candy recalls
This isn't the first time a candy recall has occurred at an inconvenient time. Last October, Arcade Snacks recalled their candy corn due to an undeclared egg allergen.
Additionally, last April, Consumer Reporters alerted shoppers that the popular Easter treat Peeps contain Red Dye 3, a known carcinogen. While Peeps were never officially recalled, it sure may have put a damper on the holiday for some.
Ultimately, being a conscious consumer and staying aware of recalls is an important part of keeping you and your family safe and healthy. Other recent recalls include Life Raft Treats for listeria and mattresses sold at Costco for mold. SheFinds is dedicated to keeping readers in the know about these issues.
