Your iPhone’s privacy and security capabilities are only as good as the settings that you know about and enable to help beef up that privacy and security. Even though Apple does a commendable job at protecting its users as much as possible, the fact remains: your privacy can be compromised in major and minor (annoying) ways that are worth knowing about.

Your Mail May Not Be Private

Many of us are used to receiving text messages from family, friends, and coworkers on a daily basis. Life is busy enough as it is, but the expectation that you’ll respond to each message in record time can be a lot of pressure to throw onto the heap of other things you have to do. If you’ve noticed that the senders of the messages you receive get annoyed with you quickly and send numerous annoying follow-up texts before you’ve even had a chance to read their first text and think about a response, the reason could be because your phone is sending them a “read” message that lets them know: yes, you’ve read their text but that you are, for reasons unknown to them, not choosing to respond right away.

There’s actually a setting on your iPhone that is responsible for letting senders know you’ve read their messages. And it can be disabled, thankfully.

How to Keep Your Mail More Private

You shouldn’t have to feel like text messages are a burden or like you’re committing a sin not responding to someone immediately. But removing the “read” message that your senders receive when you’ve read their message can help put them at ease and buy you time.

Go to Settings > Mail > within the Menu settings you’ll find “Privacy Protection.” If the feature “Protect Mail Activity” is turned off, enable it to preserve your privacy. Email and text senders won’t be able to tell when you’ve opened their messages and read them and you can respond when it is most convenient for you.
