Selena Gomez Tells The Origin Story Of Her And Taylor Swift's Friendship In A New Podcast Interview
The two pop singers both rose to fame in the mid-2000s, when Taylor's career as a young country singer took off and Selena became a popular face on the Disney Channel through hit shows like Wizards of Waverly Place. When they started getting photographed side by side at events like awards shows and parties, pop culture enthusiasts may not have realized that what brought them together wasn't an event, but a trio of famous brothers.
While being interviewed earlier this week on content creator Jake Shane's popular podcast Therapuss, the Only Murders In The Building star recalled how she and the "Midnights" singer both got to know each other because they were each dating a member of the Jonas Brothers at the same time.
"Taylor and I dated the Jonas Brothers," she admitted while laughing. "I dated Nick, and she dated Joe."
"We were like, young," she added. "We all know and love each other now, and it's so cute."
Selena went into more detail about how she knew Taylor as a "crazy" curly-haired 18-year-old who hadn't even released her arguably biggest hit, "Love Story," yet. Then, when they broke up with Nick and Joe around the same time, they "bonded" even more.
"At that age, we became best friends [and] bonded over the breakup, as girls do," said Selena. "And then we, I don't know, we just stuck around through all the ups and downs that came after, and here we are now 16 years later."
Fans React To Selena's Interview And Friendship With Taylor On Social Media
The story the 33-year-old told on the podcast quickly went viral on apps like TikTok, where fans couldn't get over the funny yet endearing story of what caused the two mega-stars to form such a close bond that stayed strong as their careers developed. They also loved hearing about how the Jonas Brothers were a catalyst for that bond.
"She and I like to say the best thing we got out of those relationships was each other," admitted Selena during her interview.
Once the clip of her talking about their friendship origins was reposted, fans began flooding comments sections across Instagram and TikTok.
"Their friendship is so beautiful," wrote a user.
"The lore behind this is crazy," added another.
Another user commented on how cool it was that the two incredibly famous women still have each other for support.
"I think it's really healthy for anyone and maybe more so for anyone famous, to have a grounded friendship with a peer who has similar experiences that is long-lasting," they explained. "So healthy and so good for your mental health."
As of right now, it still looks like the two pop culture icons are still thick as thieves, having recently posed together at Selena's birthday party. It looks like, after their breakup, the bonding that happened years ago, they'll continue to thrive in their friendship for a while.
