In the video, the 29-year-old Rare Beauty founder shares her “simple quick look” by using products from her very own celebrity makeup line. She starts off by applying foundation and highlighter, then proceeds to filling in her eyebrows. After this, she puts a light layer of cream blush on her nose and cheeks. But perhaps what got everyone’s attention was the next step—her eye makeup.
Selena applied some mascara on her upper lash line as usual. However, what she did for her lower lash line was pretty unique, if we must say so ourselves. Using a pair of tweezers, she got a bit of mascara product and pinched her lower lashes with it. As it aims to make your eyes stand out, we asked a beauty expert to weigh in if this is actually effective. Read on for some insight and tips from professional makeup artist Margina Dennis.
Selena Gomez’s Mascara Hack
According to Dennis, “Selena is creating is a doll effect [by] accentuating her large, round eyes which is youthful.” However, she warns, “I don’t recommend using tweezers in this manner as you could scratch your eye, pull out your eyelashes, and/or pinch and cut open the under eye skin.” (Again, this is your friendly reminder to stay away from tweezers fort this makeup hack!) Dennis notes, “I recommend using mascaras that can give your lashes this look [instead].”
As far as product recommendations go, she believes the Essence Beauty Lash Princess Sculpted Volume Mascara will help you achieve this look. “This mascara will give you that fanned out, defined, ‘doll lash’ look,” Dennis tells us.
She adds, “You can further make the eyes look rounded by putting eyeliner in the lash line only, not extending to the corners. It will create the illusion of a more open eye and then [you can] finish with an eye brightening pencil in the waterline. I like the Victoria Beckham Instant Brightening Waterline Pencil. It really stays pit!”
Additionally, Dennis shares that the City Beauty Lid Lifting Treatment “lifts and firms sagging eyelid to create a more youthful look.” Another product she recommends is the Lids By Design Cosmetic Strips. They “come in different widths from 3mm to 8mm and are designed to create a crease on hooded eyes which will give a more youthful appearance.”
Lastly, Dennis suggests “using a brightening color corrector for the under eye can make you look more rested and youthful.” She recommends the Becca Under Eye Corrector for this, since it “comes in shades from light to deep and looks natural.”
