Shawn Mendes officially called off the remaining dates for his 2022 Wonder: The World Tour and profusely apologized to fans in a new Instagram post this week. The “Treat You Better” hitmaker, 23, canceled upcoming shows in Europe and the United Kingdom, explaining that he needs to focus on his mental health at this time.

“I wasn’t totally prepared for the toll that being back on the road would take on me,” he confessed in a July 27 IG post for his 69.7 million followers. “I started this tour excited to finally get back to playing live after a long break due to the pandemic, but reality is I was not at all ready for how difficult touring would be after this time away. After speaking with my team and working with an incredible group of health professionals, it has become more clear that I need to take the time I’ve never taken personally, to ground myself and come back stronger,” he wrote.

Mendes continued, adding, “I know you all have been waiting so long to see these shows, and it breaks my heart to tell you this but I promise I will be back as soon as I’ve taken the right time to heal.” The Grammy nominee then ended his message and thanking his fans, “I love you all and thank you all so much for supporting me and sticking by me on this journey.”

While many fans in his comment section expressed that they “really wanted to see” him live and “were looking forward to the tour,” many acknowledged that “mental health should always come first” and wrote that they “support” the singer and “want him to feel better.” The “There’s Nothing Holding Me Back” musician’s famous friends also offered words of encouragement, with Kehlani commenting, “proud of you!!!!!! you deserve rest !!! get well Shawn!” and Tommy Hilfiger writing, “We admire your courage and fully support you, Shawn. Sending our love.”

Mendes has been more open about his mental health on social media in recent months, and announced his split from girlfriend and “Señorita” duet partner Camila Cabello in November of 2021. In March of 2022, the Canadian-born artist told fans in an IG video that he was feeling more alone after their split, and detailed the toll it was taking on his well-being.

“Who do I call when I’m, like, in a panic attack? Who do I call when I’m, like, f—ing on the edge?” he said in the video, “Now I feel like finally, I’m actually on my own, and I hate that.” Thousands of fans continue to leave loving words and messages both under his tour cancellation post and in tweets of their own.
