As you grow older your skin naturally begins to lose the firmness and elasticity of your youth due to a decline in collagen production and the simple result of gravity over the years. This loss of elasticity is also what is responsible for the development of fine lines and wrinkles, so it’s useful to create a skincare routine which boosts the outer layer of your complexion for firmer skin.
While no skincare product or treatment is truly going to be able to prevent the normal toll of aging on your body, you can certainly slow down the effect with the right ingredients. We checked in with board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Joshua Zeichner for a quick rundown on anti-aging skincare, and rounded up the top three ingredients to include in your routine for a firmer, younger looking complexion that doesn’t droop or sag.
Retinol
Easily the most popular anti-aging ingredient, retinol is well known for boosting collagen production in the body which will help to increase the firmness of your skin. “Retinol is the best studied ingredient we have to fight the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and firm the skin. That binds to receptors in the skin that tell our cells to rev up production of collagen and elastin,” explains Zeichner.
When you first integrate retinol into your routine you can expect an adjustment period where your skin may experience irritation, but this will ultimately pass. Retinol also makes your skin more sensitive to UV rays, so keeping your usage to the evening and making sure to keep up with daily SPF is also essential to getting the most out of this ingredient.
Glycolic Acid
Another ingredient with a similar impact on the skin as retinol, glycolic acid can help to smooth the skin’s surface as well as firm up your complexion to fight against signs of aging. “Glycolic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid that not only has exfoliating effects to brighten the skin, but also has been shown to increase collagen and hyaluronic acid in the skin,” notes Zeichner. “Collectively this provides skin strengthening and firming benefits.”
Bakuchiol
A more gentle, plant-based ingredient that works much like retinol, bakuchiol has recently risen in popularity within the skincare world for its anti-aging benefits. “Bakuchiol is a botanical extract often referred to as nature's retinol. While structurally different from retinol and it doesn’t work on retinoid receptors, it has been shown to enhance collagen production,” explains Zeichner. However, unlike retinol, bakuchiol does not have an adjustment period as it is significantly less harsh, so if you’re easing into a new skincare routine, this may be the way to go for firmer skin without temporary side effects.
