Have Deep Smile Lines? Here Are 5 Esthetician-Approved Ways To Smooth Them Out

Smile lines, also known as marionette lines, are a natural part of human expression—but for some, they can become a cosmetic concern over time. According to esthetician Chris Gibson, these lines can be hereditary (“go back and look at your high school yearbook pictures and you probably already have them”) or develop naturally as we age. Changes in bone structure and dental alignment make the skin more prone to folding, and what starts as a dynamic wrinkle—visible only when smiling—can eventually become static and permanent.

While many people strongly dislike these lines, Gibson says there are effective ways to make them less noticeable, whether they’ve been passed down genetically or have developed with age.

1. Fillers for Instant Volume

One of the most common treatments is hyaluronic acid fillers, which are injected into the skin to plump and smooth deep creases. “They’re really an instant fix,” Gibson says, noting that swelling subsides quickly, leaving smoother-looking skin. However, he warns against overfilling, which can lead to a puffy appearance. It’s crucial to work with a board-certified dermatologist or injector, as results last several months and cost can add up over time.

2. Botox for Dynamic Wrinkles

Botox works by freezing targeted facial muscles to reduce movement, making dynamic wrinkles—those that appear when you smile—less visible. “If it’s overdone, you can end up with that frozen look, which is a look nobody wants,” Gibson cautions. Just like fillers, Botox should only be administered by a certified professional.

3. Red Light and Radio Frequency Therapy

For a non-invasive option, Gibson recommends red light therapy and radio frequency (RF) therapy. These treatments stimulate collagen production deep within the skin, improving firmness over time. “They tickle the mitochondria, turn on the cells, and you get voila—more collagen,” he explains. Patience is key, as visible results can take weeks to months. Devices like red light masks or combination tools such as the Lumo can be used at home for gradual improvement.

4. Exfoliation for Smoother Skin

Exfoliation won’t erase smile lines, but it can make them look less pronounced by keeping the skin smooth, elastic, and refreshed. Gibson recommends chemical exfoliants like glycolic acid, lactic acid, or salicylic acid. For weekly use, he likes The Ordinary’s peel solution, and for daily use, he applies Alpha Skin Care’s 14% glycolic serum. Regular exfoliation helps speed up cellular turnover, which slows with age, resulting in a more youthful look.

5. Facial Massage & Yoga

An often-overlooked method for reducing the appearance of deep smile lines is facial massage or facial yoga. These exercises tone the cheek muscles beneath the skin, helping to push the skin outward and minimize creasing. As Gibson explains, strengthening these muscles can counteract the effects of bone and dental shrinkage that make lines more prominent.

The Bottom Line

Whether you choose in-office treatments like fillers and Botox or at-home methods like exfoliation and facial exercises, there’s no shortage of ways to soften smile lines. Gibson’s advice is clear: use certified professionals for any invasive procedure, be patient with non-invasive methods, and incorporate consistent skincare habits to keep your skin looking fresh and youthful.
