Eye makeup has the power to completely transform your look. A little bit of eyeshadow, eyeliner, or mascara can make your eyes appear brighter, more lifted, and even enhance the natural color of your irises. With the right products and techniques, your eyes can become the focal point of your face, giving you that radiant, well-rested glow we all love. The magic is in the details, though, and mastering eye makeup is all about knowing how to apply it in a way that works with your features, not against them.

The tricky part is that when eye makeup is applied incorrectly, it can have the opposite effect. Instead of opening up your eyes and creating a youthful, modern look, poor technique can exaggerate fine lines, draw attention to texture, or even make your eyes appear smaller and more tired. If your goal is a fresh, polished look that highlights your best features, avoiding certain pitfalls is key. Here are four common eye makeup mistakes to avoid at all costs, and what to do instead.

1. Heavy Eyeliner on the Waterline

Heavy eyeliner on the bottom waterline can make eyes look smaller and harsher, especially as we age. Instead of brightening the eye area, it often creates a shadow that emphasizes dark circles or fine lines. A better approach is to use a softer touch. Try lining just the upper lash line or using a brown or taupe pencil smudged close to the lashes for definition. For the lower lash line, a sweep of shadow or a nude liner on the waterline will open up the eyes and create a fresher look.

2. Overly Shimmery Eyeshadow

Too-shimmery eyeshadow can settle into fine lines and wrinkles, drawing unwanted attention to texture on the eyelids. While shimmer can look fun and glamorous, heavy metallic or glitter formulas aren’t always the most flattering. Instead, opt for satin or matte finishes in soft, neutral tones that smooth and lift the eye. If you still love a touch of glow, apply a light shimmer just to the inner corners of the eyes or the center of the lid for a more youthful, refined sparkle.

3. Skipping Mascara

Skipping mascara on the top lashes can leave eyes looking flat and unfinished. Mascara is one of the quickest ways to lift and define your eyes, giving the illusion of more open, youthful-looking eyes. If your lashes are fine or sparse, curl them first and then apply a volumizing and lengthening mascara formula. Even a single coat on the upper lashes will frame your eyes beautifully, making them look bigger and more awake.

4. Ignoring Your Eyebrows

Ignoring brows is a mistake because brows are the natural frame of the face, and thin, sparse, or uneven brows can instantly age your look. Over time, brows can naturally thin out, so filling them in with a brow pencil, powder, or tinted gel can make a huge difference. A well-shaped brow can lift the entire face and give your eye makeup a polished finish.
