Most people think of skincare as our beauty routines – the products we use and the regimen we follow. But in reality, skin is a body part just like any other and it responds to the foods we eat. So oftentimes when we have a recurring flaw in our skin, a simple diet change might be the right way to turn things around.

And as the air keeps getting colder, it’s extremely important to cut dehydrating foods our of our diets to keep our skin fresh, healthy and hydrated.

There are several dehydrating foods that most of us don’t realize might be affecting your skincare – these are the three you should avoid:

1. Sugar

Sugar is one of the worst foods for skincare, particularly as you start to age. Eating too much sugar can impede on the production of collagen and elastin, which will result in dryer skin and ultimately wrinkles, fine lines and dark spots.

 

2. Caffeine

As much as caffeine seems an essential part of your daily routine, it is often a major source of damage to the skin. It is dehydrating, depleting moisture and making your skin less equipped to repair itself from damage.

3. French Fries

Fried foods are the enemy of healthy skin. Eating things like French fries regularly may lead to premature aging. This is because the saturated fats in fried foods impedes blood circulation to the skin, so it receives less of the nutrients that it needs for a youthful appearance.

Which Foods Should You Eat For Better Hydrated Skin?

Even though certain foods may speed up aging on your skin, other foods can help promote a more youthful appearance.

"I tend to recommend focusing on diet to obtain the nutrients we need to promote natural collagen production," Dr. Erum Ilyas of Schweiger Dermatology Group in King of Prussia, PA, told SheFinds. "With collagen, our skin has more turgor and the ability to hold on to hydration more effectively. Fish, such as halibut, mackerel, salmon or tuna, contain omega 3 fatty acids.

"Omega 3 fatty acids have been shown to reduce inflammation caused by UV rays. It is thought that fish lowers prostaglandin E2 levels to prevent collagen breakdown that leads to wrinkles. Some studies have shown that in combination with vitamin E and C that omega 3 fatty acids can promote collagen synthesis. The overall net benefit is less collagen breakdown along with increased collagen production."
