Here’s why: Believe it or not, Taco John’s owned the trademark of the catchy phrase “Taco Tuesday” for more than 40 years, but Taco Bell’s long wait for the “liberation” of this beloved alliteration is finally over. Now, the Mexican-inspired fast food chain wants to celebrate—by paying for your tacos with the help of DoorDash! Find all the details below.

Taco Bell will pay for your tacos on Taco Tuesday
Taco lovers rejoice! On September 12, Taco Bell and DoorDash are putting a whopping $5 million towards taco orders from participating restaurants on the food delivery app. Score! (Maybe you can try the new dipping tacos from Taco Bell!)
Even better, up until that date, you’ll be able to grab a free Doritos Locos Taco from Taco Bell every Tuesday while the anticipation builds. That means that on Aug. 22 (today!) and Sept. 5, you can roll up to the drive-thru and get yourself a crunchy, delicious Locos Taco free of charge—no purchase necessary.
(You just may want to stay away from any shredded chicken while you’re stopping at Taco Bell, as one employee recently warned.)
This promo comes in celebration of the liberation of the once-trademarked “Taco Tuesday.” Back in July, Taco John’s relinquished their hold on the phrase so that taco vendors everywhere could use it freely.

Taco Bell made an announcement on their website:
"In May 2023, Taco Bell took a bold step on behalf of taco lovers nationwide by filing legal petitions to cancel the two Taco Tuesday trademark registrations. The aim was simple: to free the phrase for restaurants nationwide. The message was clear: Taco Tuesday belongs to everyone, from Taco Bell to Taco John’s to your favorite local taco spot," they wrote.
As Taco Bell U.S. Chief Marketing Officer Taylor Montogomery stated: "Taco Tuesday belongs to all who make, sell, eat and celebrate tacos, and this Free-For-All will not only thank taco fans who supported the cause, but will also spotlight local restaurants and vendors who can now embrace Taco Tuesdays without fear of legal action."
He put it perfectly: "When tacos win, we all win." You can say that again.
