It’s no secret that smoothies can be an easy-to-prepare and nutrient-rich meal to aid your weight loss journey, but experts stress that certain additives might be healthier than others. To learn more and find out which ingredients to prioritize for weight loss, we checked in with Jay Cowin, NNCP, RNT, RNC, CHN, CSNA, registered nutritionist, and Seamus Sullivan, B.S., CSCS, PN1, personal trainer and online performance & nutrition coach.

Be Wary of Full-Fat Dairy in Your Smoothies

While cow's milk or other dairy products might seem like healthy additions to smoothies, Cowin warns that ingredients like these might have more fat or sugar than they let on. "An ingredient you'll want to avoid in your weight loss smoothies is high-fat dairy products like whole milk, heavy cream, and ice cream," he advises. While dairy can be a good source of protein and calcium, Cowin notes that "it's also high in saturated fat and calories, which can sabotage your weight loss efforts."

Instead, Cowin suggests opting for "low-fat or non-fat dairy products like skim milk or Greek yogurt." This is a great way to add a taste you're familar with and enjoy to your smoothies, while not obtaining as much fat or sugar. Sullivan agrees, and adds that when it comes to healthy weight loss, Greek yogurt is an especially important ingredient. "Greek yogurt is a great source of protein," he says, and it is "also great for the gut microbiome due to the probiotics." A healthier gut means better digestion, he emphasizes. "When one is trying to lose weight, having an efficient digestive system will help get all the nutrients one needs without any distress such as inflammatory response," Sullivan concludes. Try some in your smoothie this week!
