Derm Shares The Easy Tips To Reduce Signs Of Aging On The Neck: Use Retinoids At Night & More

Neck lines and wrinkles—often called “tech neck”—are becoming one of the most common skincare concerns, thanks to how often we look down at our phones and screens. Over time, repeated movement and sun exposure can lead to horizontal creases and vertical bands in the neck area that make skin look older than we feel.

According to board-certified dermatologist Daniel Sugai, there are several simple but effective ways to help prevent and treat these visible signs of aging before they deepen.

@drspf The struggle is real! Protect With Daily Sunscreen

The first and most important step is sun protection. Dr. Sugai emphasizes wearing sunscreen every day to preserve collagen and prevent further breakdown in the skin. He notes that applying sunscreen not just to the face, but extending it down to the neck, is key. Non-tinted formulas may be preferable for some people to avoid staining clothing, but consistency is what matters most.

Avoid Smoking

Smoking is another major contributor to premature neck aging. Dr. Sugai warns that it can irreversibly damage the skin by activating enzymes that break down collagen in the dermis. Cutting out smoking is one of the most impactful steps for maintaining firmer, healthier-looking skin.

Use Retinoids at Night

At bedtime, retinoids can play a powerful role in improving skin texture and boosting collagen production. However, the neck is often more sensitive than the face, so Dr. Sugai recommends starting with a small amount—about a half pea-sized dose—to minimize irritation. Whether prescription-strength or over-the-counter, retinoids should be introduced gradually.

Try Peptide-Based Skincare

If retinoids are too irritating, peptide-infused moisturizers and serums are a gentler alternative. Products from brands like Paula’s Choice, Ole Henriksen, and Cetaphil contain peptides—amino acid chains that act as “messengers” to support collagen production and skin repair over time.

Consider In-Office Treatments

For more advanced neck lines, Dr. Sugai suggests consulting a dermatologist about injectable treatments like Botox. These can help relax vertical platysma bands (sometimes called the “Hulk muscles”) as well as soften horizontal neck lines for a smoother appearance.

The Bottom line

Neck wrinkles are common, but not inevitable. With daily sun protection, targeted skincare like retinoids or peptides, and professional treatments when needed, it’s possible to maintain a firmer, more youthful-looking neck over time.
