Style is in the eye of the beholder. If you love ultra-long hair or hair that’s extremely straight and void of texture and you feel like your best self rocking this style, than it’s the one for you — no need to listen to anyone’s hot take on it.

But there are plenty of us floating around feeling unsettled in our haircuts and hairstyles. They aren’t emphasizing the facial features we want to show off, nor are they making the most of our hair type or hair changes, which can include thinning and finer hair than we’re used to. As you’re navigating various haircuts and trying to figure out what you want to try this spring, it might be best to avoid a few that are unflattering on many women. Here are six haircuts that can be aging and that many stylists try to avoid after age 40.

1. Blunt Bob With No Layers

A blunt bob is one of the hottest trends of the season, and you don’t necessarily need layers to make your bob look chic. Its blunt ends can do a lot to make hair appear more dense and thicker. However, if you are suffering from flat roots, not having any layers at all won’t help. A few layers can create movement.

2. Flat, All One-Length Hair

Similar to the blunt bob, any all-length style can appear flat, but the longer your grow your hair, the more it tends to sit there at the roots. While one-length hair is great for shine, it isn’t advisable if you need to boost your hair’s volume.

3. Overly Long Hair

We love Demi Moore’s signature long hair — she’s one of those women who can just get away with it. It’s very important to keep your hair healthy and go for regular trims if your goal is to wear very long hair, especially as we age and our hair can become more delicate and prone to splitting and thinning. If your hair is so long that the bottom is spliced, it could be a sign that a haircut can do your hair more justice.

4. Short and Spiky

It can seem at first like the shorter your hair, the better it can conceal thinning hair. And while it’s true that short hair can make thin strands appear denser, if your haircut is too short and spiky, it may show areas of scalp that have become sparse over the years. It may be better to let strands grow long enough to cover your scalp.

5. Heavy Bangs

Bangs can be youthful,  but not all bangs styles are the same. A bang that’s heavy, blunt, and square in shape can look severe and make the face appear more square and harsh. Keep the bangs, but ask your stylist to make them thinner and more airy.

6. Shoulder-Length Hair With No Movement

Shoulder-length hair is a great compromise between long and short hair. It gives you the option to pull your hair back or up, but styling it down is also easier than it would be with waist-length hair. But medium cuts are difficult to pull off when they lack layers, face-framing pieces, and movement. The additional length tends to just sit there and drag the face down. Consider layers to free up this style.
