First off, highlighter is used to make your skin look brighter and give it a glow. The first thing you want to do is find a highlighter that will give a natural appearance, not something that will blind people with sparkles throughout the day!
Also, remember that the "less is more" rule strictly applies to using highlighter. Using too much can make your face shine like a disco ball, and unless you're going to a rave or club, you definitely don't want that look. Use only a little bit with a proper highlight brush to give your skin a natural-looking glow.
Placement is a huge factor in making your face look younger. Apply some highlighter on just the bones of your cheeks, the tip of your nose, and your cupid's bow. Remember, highlight exaggerated parts of your face you want to pop out for definition, so use it wisely!
