Key Rosehip Oil Benefits

Rosehip oil is one of the most popular ingredients in skincare and is renowned for its antioxidant properties, which means that it can help combat the signs of environmental stress in the skin and prevent it from causing any future damage. "[Rosehip oil] contains a natural source of antioxidants, such as tocopherols and carotenoids, to help protect from daily oxidative stress," Los Angeles-based dermatologist Rachael Cayce, a member of the Physicians Formula Physicians Coalition, says.

Rosehip Oil For Acne-Prone Skin

The important ingredient also contains linoleic acid, Dr. Cayce says makes it excellent for those with acne-prone skin that are constantly battling breakouts. The oil's linoleic acid and vitamin A help regulate sebum production and prevent pimples and blackheads. Rosehip oil has also been found to help reduce the appearance of scarring and can help fade acne scars and dark spots to deliver a clear, more even complexion.

Rosehip Oil For Aging Skin

As for its anti-aging benefits, rosehip oil has been found to improve the firmness and plumpness of aging skin because it contains skin-healthy vitamins and fats. "It's an ingredient that I use in a lot of my products because it is very agreeable to many skin types," celebrity esthetician Renée Rouleau tells ELLE, noting that rosehip oil is a rich source of vitamins C and E and that they "promote a youthful, supple appearance."

Rosehip Oil For Dry Skin

Rosehip oil is also an effective ingredient for those with dry skin as it plays a large role in repairing and strengthening the lipid barrier. "Rosehip oil is considered a lipid-rich oil that goes to work quickly to close up the cracks so that the skin can get repaired back to a comfortable-feeling state. It will correct both the lack of oil and lack of hydration deep within your skin," Rouleau continues.

How To Use A Facial Oil

Deciding when to apply a facial oil depends on your skin type, according to Anis. She notes that applying a facial oil before bed is an optimal time for those experiencing dryness and stress as your skin will soak up the oil overnight, giving you the moisture, nutrients, and protection that your skin needs during the day.

For those will dullness, Anis says that using a facial oil in the morning is your best bet. She recommends using your go-to facial oil as a primer before makeup to enhance your skin's radiance for a hydrated, dewy look--just make sure to let the oil fully absorb first before you put on your makeup.

Anis also stresses that facial oils should be applied differently than your moisturizers and serums. Instead of rubbing it into your skin, she says that you must dab or pat the oil to ensure that the formula gets into your pores and doesn't just sit on top of your face. This will not only help improve your facial oil's efficacy, but it will also allow the product to absorb faster as well.

Remember: a little goes a long way. You only need about one to three drops of a facial oil to reap its benefits.
