For women over 40, foundation can be a tricky beauty tool. While it’s tempting to layer on more coverage to hide wrinkles, Cristina Pignataro, a makeup artist with over 25 years of experience, warns that piling on foundation can actually make fine lines and wrinkles more visible. “More foundation does not cover more wrinkles,” she explains. “It does the exact opposite.”

@njmakeupartist Foundation mistake 1: More foundation does NOT cover more wrinkles! It actually makes them more noticeable. I’m showing you 2 EASY ways to keep your skin looking smooth, fresh & flawless without being thick or cakey. Worst Foundation Mistakes Over 40

Instead of caking on heavy formulas, Pignataro recommends two smarter approaches to achieve smooth, radiant skin without accentuating lines.

Her first suggestion is to switch to a hydrating skin tint. Modern skin tints, she notes, offer impressive coverage while keeping skin moisturized—a perfect combination for more mature complexions. Pignataro loves options like Ciele and Kylie Cosmetics’ skin tints, which deliver a natural glow and hydration while evening out skin tone.

For a more budget-friendly alternative, she recommends Maybelline’s skin tint, praising its blend of coverage and nourishment.

For those who can’t part with their favorite full-coverage foundation, Pignataro offers a simple trick: mix a little moisturizer with your foundation.

This technique transforms the formula into a more lightweight, skin-like tint that still provides coverage but won’t settle into fine lines or create a cakey appearance. “You’re still going to get the coverage of your foundation,” she says, “but it’s sheared out just enough to look hydrated and youthful.”

The Bottom Line

By adopting either of these methods, Pignataro assures women that they can maintain flawless skin without emphasizing wrinkles. The key takeaway? Less really is more when it comes to foundation, and a skin-friendly formula can make all the difference in creating a smooth, radiant, and age-defying finish.
