Hair maintenance is perhaps one of the most common concerns women have nowadays. Apart from making your mane look good, it’s also important that you make an effort to keep it healthy. In fact, if you have dyed hair, you kind of have that responsibility to give your locks some *extra* TLC. Since dyeing your hair involves applying certain chemicals, you absolutely want to make sure that you’ve got a proper haircare routine down pat.

And when it comes to shampoo products, there are actually some ingredients that you should avoid. Keep reading as celebrity hair colorist Bianca Hillier explains what these are.

Shampoo Ingredients To Avoid For Dyed Hair

According to Hillier, "To maintain color treated hair, it’s best to avoid sulfate based shampoo, sodium chloride, and parabens. Instead, it is best to use a color-safe shampoo to maintain the color and health in the hair." Below, she talks about each shampoo ingredient and tells us how it affects your color-treated hair.

Sulfates

Hillier says, "Sulfates are used in shampoo to lather and deeply cleanse the hair by stripping oils, but this can cause the hair to become dry and brittle." She adds, "[They] are very common in shampoos, but also common in household cleaners and detergents."

Sodium Chloride

Similarly, she notes that sodium chloride is an ingredient to keep away from if you have dyed hair. "Sodium chloride is commonly used as a thickening agent in shampoos but draws out moisture in the hair," she tells us. "This causes the hair to become dry, dehydrate the hair strand, and strip color from your hair."

Parabens

Lastly, Hillier mentions that "parabens are also considered an irritant to skin and hair." She continues, "[They are] chemical preservatives used for their antibacterial and anti-fungal properties which increases [the shelf life of beauty products].

Ingredients And Hair Care Products For Dyed Hair

As an alternative, Hillier suggests to "look for ingredients such as glycerin, oils, biotin, and vitamins." She explains, "These ingredients promote moisture and shine to last in the hair structure, all while keeping hair healthy and strong."

To conclude, she personally recommends that "for color treated hair, it is best to use a color-safe shampoo like Olaplex No 4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo to keep your color vibrant and maintain the health in colored hair." She emphasizes that this product is "100 percent free of sulfates, phthalates, parabens, or gluten and contains Olaplex’s patented bond building technology to repair and strengthen the hair for healthier hair."
