The 125 Best New Beauty Launches Of 2023

What: The Backlace

Why: J-Lo’s not the only one who’s proud of her posterior. What better way to draw attention to your celebrated curves, than too add a little bling to your back? Or, if you’re more traditional, these long chains of semi-precious stones can be worn as necklaces. My initial concern with these long sparkly “backlaces” was that they were a little too prom. I’m not afraid to admit when I’m wrong. I wore one of the simpler designs, all clear stones with a silver chain, with one of my favorite distressed wife-beaters, tight jeans, and black heels. The overall effect was Jersey circa 1985, minus the hair and blue eye shadow. The little bits of sparkle showing through the rips in my shirt definitely garnered a fair share of double takes, and even a few compliments. From girls that actually meant it. One slightly misguided youth on St. Mark’s asked if I had my back pierced. Ummm no. The matching earrings that came along with the backlace were equally delicate, and managed to pull the outfit together perfectly. For a real one-of-a-kind piece, you can always design your own! Each piece of “The Couture Collection” is hand-made by the designer, Cheri Petrini-Hayden. The backlace won’t go with everything, but when you do find that special shirt or party dress, a little bit of uniquely placed sparkle is the way to go.
