I have a complicated relationship with matte lipstick.
To be fair, I do love a soft matte finish that blurs everything and pull your whole look together! But I’m also a skincare girlie down to my core, and I don’t really want a product anywhere near my face if it’s going to dry out my skin or lips. Case in point: I once wore a gorgeous matte pink lipstick as a bridesmaid at a friend’s wedding, only to glance in the bathroom mirror two hours later and notice my lips looking dry and flaky underneath all that pigment. Cue the instant regret.
So naturally, I’ve always gravitated toward makeup that pulls double duty. That’s actually just one reason I’ve been a longtime fan of South Asian makeup brand Kulfi Beauty. If you know Kulfi, then you already know Lassi Lips, the viral Staining Lip Oil that somehow has both the shine and hydration of a lip oil, plus the lasting pigment of a stain. Most traditional lip oils hydrate but don’t give you much color payoff, and most lip stains have pigment but skip the hydrating gloss altogether. Lassi Lips said, why not both?
Like pretty much all of BeautyTok, I’m obsessed, so the second I heard Kulfi dropped a new lip stain on August 11, I was all ears. Their new Lassi Lips Matte Blur Lip Stain ($24) might finally be enough to make matte-skeptics like me fully reconsider all my future lip purchases.
There’s a lot that makes the Matte Blur Lip Stain different from other matte lippies that have let me down before. For starters, it’s not trying to be a totally separate product from the Lassi Lips I already love. It uses the same iconic staining technology, just reimagined in a soft-focus matte finish. It glides on like silk, then sets into a perfectly blurred, your-lips-but-better look, with up to 8 hours of wear.
The part that got my skincare-obsessed brain to relax is the formula: it’s made with squalane and arginine to keep your lips nourished and moisturized while the color sets. In short, there’s no tight, dry, or flaky feeling that makes most mattes a dealbreaker.
It’s also lightweight and buildable, which as a redhead, is great for me. (Heavy, dark colors and I don’t mesh well.) Thankfully, there are so many different ways to play with the Matte Blur Lip Stain. You can keep it sheer for an easy, everyday look, build it up for something more saturated, or layer it under a gloss for a little bit of extra shine on top of the matte finish.
Speaking of lip styling, can we talk about the shade range for a second? True to Kulfi’s roots, each of the six shades is named after a beloved South Asian beverage. It’s such a warm, specific nod to the brand’s heritage, and you can feel that influence in the color palette itself. There’s Noon Chai (a dusty pink), Earl Grey (a cool beige), Masala Soda (rose brown), Jujube Fizz (burnt rose), Toddy (cool berry), and Mulled Wine (a deep wine). Whether you gravitate toward something soft or dramatic, there’s a shade with your name on it.
If I had to pick favorites (and I did, immediately), I’m drawn to Earl Grey and Noon Chai. Noon Chai’s dusty pink color feels perfectly ladylike and an easy everyday go-to, while Earl Grey’s cool beige is the kind of gorgeous neutral I want for my no makeup makeup days.
And OK, I know it sounds like I’m just gushing at this point, so let’s back it up with something other than my own opinion.
In Kulfi’s own testing, 100% of people agreed the formula made their lips appear smoother. Another 97% said it blurred and perfected compared to bare lips, and 90% said their lips still felt soft after wearing it. For a matte lip product, especially one that lasts up to 8 hours, those numbers are honestly kind of wild. Most formulas that promise all-day wear usually make you pay for it somewhere, but this one seems to have figured out how to keep the color without making your lips pay the price.
I totally get it if you’re not a matte fan, because I’m not either. But I think Kulfi’s Lassi Lips Matte Blur Lip Stain will totally change your mind. Having just launched August 11, it’s officially hot off the press—and hot enough to earn a spot in your makeup bag.
Go grab your favorite shade before everyone else on BeautyTok gets to it first.
