There’s no shortage of haircare products that promise to nourish and improve the quality and health of coarse, curly hair. Some are good, but Madam C.J. Walker Beauty Culture’s new line of haircare products is, quite possibly, one of the most exciting launches in this category to come along in a long while.

Building upon the legacy of Sarah Breedlove (a.k.a. Madam C.J. Walker) who is credited as being the first female millionaire thanks to her homegrown line of African-American haircare products, the new Madam C.J. Walker Beauty Culture line boasts an array of products that address a multitude of hair needs.

I was lucky enough to get my hands on a large sample of Madam C.J. Walker’s products, but immediately began suffering from a major case of FOMO. My hair isn’t particularly thick and the little wave that I do have blows up into a frizzy mess when there’s even a little humidity in the air. Come autumn, my hair is perpetually in a sad, straight state.

My daughter, however, was blessed with a head full of unruly, coarse waves and she would serve as the perfect guinea pig (er, model) for my Madam C.J. Walker experiment. Because her hair tends to be extremely dry, I was thrilled to find Madame C.J. Walker’s Cleansing and Conditioning Ultra-Moisturizing Co-Wash (part of the “Maximize Moisture” line) added hydration, lifted dirt and oil, didn’t strip her hair of moisture and–what a sweet bonus–smelled heavenly. On days when I blow dry her hair, I add a dime-size amount of the Smooth Style Silkening Blow Out Créme after towel drying her hair and the change in my daughter’s hair since using these products has been considerable. It’s so much softer and more manageable, which is nice because she no longer screams when I have to brush her tangled hair. And all of those little fly-aways that used to stick straight up by the crown of her head? No longer noticeable! Did I mention the scent?

Good news for women like me, whose hair isn’t their crowning glory: the teeniest amount of Scent and Shine Coconut Oil applied only to the tips of my hair keep frizziness at bay. And the Wonderful Deep Conditioning Masque (again, the smallest amount possible to avoid greasy build-up) restores shine without weighing my hair down.

I mentioned the scent, right?
