Every year brings a fresh crop of wedding trends–and next year will be no different. But 2021 will definitely set itself apart with a focus on giving your guests an amazing experience while also keeping everyone safe. We asked some wedding pros to share what they think will be the biggest trends for the coming year. Here are the top 11 to keep an eye on.
1. Virtual Weddings
Live streaming weddings will continue well into 2021, with guests who cannot attend now able to be a part of the special day virtually, says JoAnn Gregoli of Elegant Occasions by JoAnn Gregoli.
2. Smaller Guest Lists
With social distancing rules still in effect, couples will continue to have a smaller, safer and more intimate group of guests, explains Aviva Samuels of Kiss the Planner.
3. Custom Masks
Couples can now get formal masks that coordinate with their wedding gown and tux, as well as hand out monogrammed masks as favors for their guests, says Melisa Imberman of The Event Of A Lifetime.
4. Outdoor Locations
Most states have more liberal restrictions for gatherings outdoors, leading couples to opt to get married at their parents’ house or a weekend house. "Some couples are getting married in a place that has special meaning to them, while others are renting outdoor venues or public spaces," says Imberman.
5. Mint Green
"Just as we predicted the Neo-Mint trend in early 2020 - a rebirth of the pastel shade in varying gradients of mint, turquoise, aqua, seafoam, and more - will see a continuation of this in a number of hues," predicts Kylie Carlson of The Wedding Academy.
6. Succulents
According to Marie Kubin of Rent My Wedding, today's couples are all about the environment and favor minimalist styles. With that in mind, succulents are being used in bridal bouquets, boutonnieres, and centerpieces. "The best part is that the bride can actually plant her bouquet after the wedding and have a keepsake for years to come. And the succulent centerpieces double as wedding favors for the guests to take home," she explains.
7. Simpler Wedding Gowns
Princess ball gowns and tight mermaid dresses are shifting towards simple, flowy dresses that are truly timeless, predicts Brianna Parks of Brianna Parks Photography.
8. Bold Decor
Larger elements that have a significant impact will be in for 2021. Larger floral installations to cozy conversation areas with specialty rentals will be extremely popular, says Joan Wyndrum, Blooms by the Box.
9. Mini Cakes
The Knot predicts that smaller or even mini individual portioned wedding cake will be popular next year. And while the cakes will grow smaller in size, they will be more dynamic in detail.
10. Alternative Entertainment
Couples are finding unique ways to entertain their guests. While DJ's or live bands will continue to facilitate events, the pros at Wedding Wire say that couples will also be looking into alternative entertainment, like stand-up comedians or performers, as an add-on to keep guests entertained from their own tables.
11. Welcome Boxes
Most couples will have hand sanitizer and even masks available at their venues. Bring your guest experience to the next level with welcome boxes at the entry point, suggests the pros at The Knot.
