If you read the ingredients list on your favorite skincare product, there’s a good chance you have found that it contains quite a few things you’ve never heard of in your life. And while there are plenty of botanicals and synthetic ingredients that are proven effective for your skin, perhaps you are craving a more simplified skincare routine — one that can even save you money. Turmeric is a bright yellow spice that has so many benefits, according to nutritional experts. But it is also taking center stage in skincare, and it doesn’t cost an arm and a leg to get on board the trend. If you have these two ingredients your kitchen and about five minutes in your day, this is the 2-ingredient turmeric butter you should try before bed that can brighten and moisturize your complexion.

First: some turmeric basics.

Turmeric is a jewel-toned yellow spice that contains a component called curcumin, which isrich in antioxidants and the key to unlocking anti-inflammatory properties. Even though we’re seeing turmeric in more skincare products now, it’s nothing new. For centuries people have relied upon it as a medicinal herb. It has been linked to better brain functioning and a lower risk of heart disease, though keep in mind studies on natural supplements are few and far between. Its most common use is as an anti-inflammatory that may be able to reduce pains associated with conditions like arthritis.

So, what does this all mean when it comes to skincare?

Yet again, the data is not as robust as one would like, but initial thoughts about turmeric include that it may be able to heal wounds, help heal acne scarring, and even help with skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema. If you’re not convinced of these things until you see more scientific proof, you can take solace in the fact that its anti-inflammatory properties can, at the very least, give you a smoother complexion and more glowing skin.

Naturally, whenever a more trendy skincare ingredient starts to grab headlines, beauty companies jump on board and create moisturizers, serums, and masks that contain that ingredient (and often several fillers). And because of its popularity, they can also charge a premium for you to enjoy its benefits. And that’s why this simple 2-ingredient turmeric butter is such a gem. Grab a bowl, a double broiler, and a container to store your finished product and get ready to whip up your own effective mask right in your kitchen.

Here are the ingredients you’ll need:

6 Tbsp of organic shea butter
1 tsp of organic turmeric powder.
Few drops of turmeric essential oil (optional)

To make this mask, melt the raw shea butter in a double broiler and then place it in the fridge to cool down. After it has cooled, place the shea butter and turmeric powder in a blender and whip it until it’s soft. If you’d like, you can add a few drops of the turmeric essential oil to give your mask a creamier consistency.

And that’s it — that’s all it takes. Apply the mask after cleansing your skin, allow it to absorb, and try not to constantly run your hands across your cheeks because they’re SO darn smooth now.
