I've loved Burt's Bees since the day, years and years ago, when I spotted a tin of hand salve, with its now-iconic image of founder Burt Shavitz on the bright yellow packaging. There was something both modern and antiquated about the natural ingredients it used, which include olive oil and, yes, beeswax. Most importantly: it worked and rid my tortured hands of winter dryness like no other product I had ever tried.
Effective, convenient, and far less costly than some of its competitors--what more could you want from a product? Burt's Bees owes its start to hitchhiking.
Mark this under: don't try this at home. Co-founder Roxanne Quimby was hitching a ride in Maine in 1984 when a bearded man named Burt Shavitz, who sold honey on the side of the streets, picked her up in his old pickup truck. Two two got to talking and decided to start a little business selling candles using all of the leftover beeswax from Burt's hives. After raking in $20,000 that first year alone, they realized they had the start of a booming business.

The company believes in practicing what they preach.
Every year, the Burt's Bees staff hold a Culture Day where they spend time planting urban gardens, building beehive boxes, and helping to save the bee population. They're also conscious of the environment (they don't even have trash cans by their desks) and offer onsite yoga at lunch. In other words: they're the real deal!
