4 Android Apps Tech Experts Say Are ‘Unnecessary’ And Take Up Your Storage

If your Android phone is running low on storage, you’re definitely not alone. Between photos, videos, and many apps that are likely on your phone, it’s easy for your device to get bogged down—often without you even realizing it. But here’s something many people overlook: some pre-installed or rarely used apps can take up a lot of space, and you might not even need them. Clearing out just a few of these can free up storage and even help your phone run faster.

The key is knowing which apps are worth keeping and which ones are just taking up valuable space. Some apps not only use storage but also run in the background, quietly draining your battery and slowing things down. If you’ve ever wondered why your phone feels sluggish or why you’re always running out of room, it might be time for a little app cleanup. Here are four Android apps that you may find unnecessary—and that could be eating up more storage than they’re worth.

1. Cleaner Apps

Cleaner apps that promise to “boost” your phone or free up space with one tap are completely unnecessary. Android already has built-in tools that do a pretty good job of this on their own. Many of these third-party cleaner apps take up a surprising amount of space and run in the background, which can slow your phone down instead of helping. Plus, they often come with ads or unnecessary notifications.

2. Battery Optimization Apps

Battery-saving apps sound like a great idea, but most of them don’t really offer anything new. Android already has smart battery optimization built in, and these extra apps often just end up repeating what your phone is already doing. Even worse, they can keep running in the background, using the battery power they’re supposed to be saving—and taking up space while they’re at it.

3. Social Media Apps

Many of us love to scroll, but social media apps like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok can be major space hogs. They store tons of cached data—like videos, images, and saved logins—without you even noticing. If you don’t use a particular app regularly, or if you’re trying to free up some serious storage, consider deleting it and just using the mobile version through your browser. You still get most of the features, but without the constant background activity and storage drain.

4. Shopping Apps

Retail apps like Amazon, Shein, Temu, or Wish can be super convenient when you’re in the mood to shop—but they also quietly take up space with saved data, images, and notifications you probably didn’t ask for. Most people use these apps occasionally, not daily, so it makes sense to delete them and just shop through the mobile site when you need to. Your storage will thank you, too.
