Kutcher and Kunis faced significant public backlash in September 2023 after writing character letters supporting their That '70s Show co-star, Danny Masterson, ahead of his sentencing for rape. The controversy prompted the couple to issue apologies, led to Kutcher resigning from Thorn—the anti-child sex abuse organization he co-founded—and sparked renewed scrutiny of their past, including their ties to Sean “Diddy” Combs.
In 2023, Masterson was convicted of raping two women in 2003 and sentenced to 30 years to life in prison. The pair had written letters to Judge Charlaine F. Olmedo requesting leniency, which the public interpreted as supporting a convicted rapist. Many saw this as especially hypocritical given Kutcher’s work with Thorn.
