Barbra Streisand is not a fan of Donald Trump or what he has done to the Kennedy Center – at least according to a message she wrote on her website on Thursday, September 17th! And as you can imagine, the message did not go down well with Trump supporters on social media.
The 84-year-old iconic singer and actress, who hasn’t been shy about sharing her opinions on Trump over the years, released a statement decrying the president’s changes to the Kennedy Center last week, and slammed his “unchecked ego” in the message, much to the annoyance of some of his supporters. Barbra Streisand Slams Donald Trump's Changes To The Kennedy Center
The POTUS, 80, has been at the center of an ongoing battle over the historic venue after attempts were made to add his name to the building. The Kennedy Center's board voted in December 2025 to rename the venue "The Donald J. Trump and The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts" – the Trump Kennedy Center for short – and Trump's name was subsequently added to the façade. However, a federal judge later ruled that only Congress had the authority to officially rename the Kennedy Center, and ordered Trump's name to be removed.
Since returning to the White House, Trump has also become chairman of the Kennedy Center's board, which is composed of his allies, and announced plans to reshape its programming, per Reuters.
Trump has since suggested that the building could be "ripped down." As expected, the controversy has divided opinion, with Streisand being one of the more vocal opponents.
In a statement released on her website on September 17th, the Oscar-winner and 2008 Kennedy Center honoree said: "Re-naming the Cultural Center in JFK's honor was a fitting choice, because he was a true champion of the arts. That is why what is happening to the Kennedy Center is so galling and painful to witness."
She went on to talk about how Trump's attempts to add his name to the building had been blocked by a judge, adding: "Yet the fight continued. After his name was removed, a humiliated Trump ordered a large tarp placed over the façade, where it remains today. Now, a thoroughly defeated Trump has announced that the Kennedy Center is being closed for what the completely stacked board describes as a major renovation. Oddly, when Trump's name was still on the building, there was no discussion of closing it!"
"You can easily imagine my indignation at seeing this revered institution become the subject of such a bitter struggle over one man's name and unchecked ego," Streisand went on. She concluded her statement on the situation by saying: "Yet another reason why it is so important that Americans exercise their right to vote in the upcoming midterm elections!"

While there were unsurprisingly many people who sided with Streisand, social media was also full of people – seemingly MAGA supporters – who didn't like what she was saying, with some accusing her of hypocrisy, claiming she had a big ego herself, and others saying they didn't "care" about her opinions. Others also asked how much she had donated to the Kennedy Center, deeming it an important question.
"She is irrelevant," slammed one Trump supporter on X. "Who cares what she says?" asked a second, as a third said: "Babs is way overrated." "Insufferable Babs," declared a fourth, as a fifth added: "Why does her opinion matter?"
"That's rich," noted a sixth. "Pot calling the kettle black," quipped a seventh, as an eighth said: "I agree that this is a silly idea, but when it comes to egos, Barbra is no slouch." "An egomaniac calling out another egomaniac. Typical," a ninth chimed in. "Her unchecked ego for decades was far far worse," concurred a tenth. "She should go picnicking with her great great great great grandchildren instead of seeking attention," thought an eleventh.
"If those millionaire celebrities had donated the money to fix the Kennedy Center before Trump got there, he wouldn't have had the option to fix it and put his name on it," commented a twelfth, while a thirteenth asked: "How much has Streisand donated to the Kennedy Center?" "Why doesn't Barbra Streisand use her money to renovate the Kennedy Center that the ceiling is crashing down?" enquired a fourteenth.
