The term “glass skin,” a hallmark of Korean beauty signifying skin that is luminous, smooth, and almost translucent, made its way into Western vocabulary over five years ago.

In recent years, TikTok, Instagram and other social media platforms have been awash with images and videos showcasing dewy, hydrated complexions, with K-pop idols epitomizing this highly soughtafter look.

3 Beverages To Prioritize This Summer For Luminous ‘Glass Skin,’ According To Experts

On this note, beauty and wellness expert Jen, known as @nakdnu on TikTok, has shared invaluable advice on three essential beverages to incorporate into your daily routine to achieve that coveted “glass skin.”

We also did some research of our own and checked in for further tips and insights from Dr. Debra Jaliman, MD, board-certified NYC dermatologist and Assistant Professor of Dermatology at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and  Lisa Richards, registered nutritionist, health expert and creator of The Candida Diet.

1. 2 Liters Of Water Every Day

First up is "2 liters of water per day, minimum," the creator explained. "This is important because it hydrates your body, and your body is made up of at least 70% water."

She further highlights that consuming ample water daily, particularly in the sweltering summer months, can significantly enhance not only your skin's appearance but also your digestive system and overall health.

2. A Collagen Powder Added To Water

The next beverage the TikToker recommends preparing is one with a "collagen supplement" powder mixed in, as it "improves and maintains" the skin elasticity, keeping it plump and glowing.

Jaliman agrees, and recommends “mixing collagen powder with water or any drink” to specifically target your anti-aging goals. This powerful pairing helps with overall hydration as your body needs water at any age, and collagen powder directly links to collagen production.

The more collagen we have, she says, the more youthful our skin will feel and appear.

3. Chinese Medicine Glow-Up Powder Added To Water

The TikToker’s ultimate summer beverage recommendation is a revitalizing water concoction infused with a "glow-up powder" rooted in ancient Chinese medicine.

One popular choice is a $59 Nakdnu product, which blends hydrating elements such as tremella powder extract—an age-old medicinal mushroom cherished in East Asian traditions—alongside lotus seeds, goji berries, and red dates, all of which are staples in both traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic healing practices.

"It helps you manage inflammation and combat collagen-decreasing activities such as stress," she notes.

The Bottom Line

When consulting dermatologists, nutritionists, and skincare gurus for drinks that enhance skin's health and radiance, it's no shock that the majority of their suggestions revolve around water. Experts unanimously emphasize that prioritizing hydration is paramount—something many people overlook in their quest for glowing skin and graceful aging.

Our skin loses moisture as we age, making it crucial to consume adequate amounts of water and hydrating fluids to counteract this natural decline. Collagen loss begins as young as the age of 21 and by the age of 40, women have lost "between 10-20 percent of their collage and 1% thereafter," Richards explains.

After 40, you can still promote "glass" skin, she notes, by taking collagen supplements, and eating foods rich in collagen, such as bone broth, eggs, chicken, berries, etc.

"There are three primary types of collagen and it is best to consume a collagen supplement that contains most of the five forms," she says, "At the least it is ideal to take types 1 and 3 together."

Collagen can be taken supplementally as a capsule or powder form. "When taken as a powder, especially mixed in with a protein powder, this can enhance absorption of the collagen," Richards concludes. The more you know!
