Those with hooded eyes know that their glam routine requires specialized products and methods to make their eyes pop–and it’s all because of the extra fold of skin that covers the crease in your eyelids.

“These types of eyelids are impossible for makeup, especially eyeliner and shadow because they EAT anything you put on them, making it magically disappear after about an hour,” says Sue Smith of XO Jane. “I don’t want to be dramatic and say that I’ve struggled with this issue my whole life. But really, I have. In my journey, I’ve tried several liners, and most of them have been eaten by my monster lids.”

Because of your eye’s small nature, you need to use eye products that are durable, long lasting and won’t disappear into your eyelid. It’s a struggle, but thankfully, there are so many amazing eyeliners, mascaras, eyeshadows and genius makeup tricks for hooded eyes that actually work!

Here are the beauty products every woman with hooded eyes NEEDS in her makeup bag:

A Waterproof Mascara That Won't Budge

Longer lashes equal wider and brighter eyes. Those with hooded eyes know that their lashes spend a lot of time touching the brow bone due to their eye shape. With that being said, you don't want to use a mascara that will budge or smudge. Instead, you should invest in a waterproof mascara that will keep your lashes looking their best all day long.

An Eyeliner That Will Stick Around For Cat Eyes

Getting the perfect cat eye is a challenge for hooded lids, but it's one of the best ways to open the eyes. To achieve the best cat eye for your eye shape, draw a straight line across your waterline. Then, open your eyes and flick a wing with an angled brush. Gently pull your lid outward and upward, elongating the wing past the fold in your eye. Trace over the line to make it even and voilá!

Smith recommends using a liquid eyeliner because it will stay in place for most of the day. But, she advises to use it with caution. "Hooded lid ladies gotta be careful when putting [liquid eyeliner] on. Apply to one lid, keep your eye closed, wait several minutes for it to dry, and carefully open your eyelid. If you don’t wait for it to dry, it will get on the upper fold of your eyelid and cause a huge mess," she says.

Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner ($27)

If liquid eyeliner isn't your style, try this long-wear gel liner from Bobbi Brown, which is pigment-rich and offers up to 12 hours of wear. It glides easily onto lids and is also waterproof and sweat/ humidity-resistant, making it perfect for those with hooded lids.

A Good Matte Eyeshadow Palette

Matte eyeshadow shades are excellent for minimizing the appearance of your upper brow bone, whereas shimmery shades will reflect the light and make it look bigger. Make sure to apply your shadow right above where you're marking your crease instead of on your natural crease. This ensures that the color won't get lost when your eye is open.

Too Faced Just Peachy Velvet Matte Eyeshadow Palette ($45)

When it comes to matte eyeshadow palettes, nothing compares to Too Faced's Just Peachy palette. It features 12 high-pigmented shades of warm peaches, buttery creams, and rich browns that will add an instant glow to your eyes.

A Primer To Keep Your Shadow In Place

Like we mentioned before, it's hard to make eye makeup stay on hooded lids. A great way to lock in your glam is by using an eyeshadow primer, which works to prevent any smears, smudges or creases.
